Woman sought for robbery and kidnapping

On October 17, 2014 the Medicine Hat Police Service received a report of a kidnapping which occurred during the weekend of October 13, 2014.  Following an investigation into the matter Chad Murray, a 34 year old Medicine Hat male has been arrested and charged with robbery, kidnaping and breach of probation. He has been remanded in custody and will next appear in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on October 21, 2014.

On October 18, 2014 the MHPS Major Crimes Section executed a search warrant in relation to this file at a residence located in the 900 block of 3 Street SE.  The MHPS Tactical Team was deployed to support the investigation and mitigate any risks to the public or police investigators.

Wanted: Donna Dafoe
The MHPS is requesting assistance from the public to locate Donna Dafoe (DOB 1976-June-24).  A warrant has been issued her arrest for robbery and kidnapping.  Donna is described as a female with brown hair, brown eyes, approximately 162cm tall and 59kg (see photo below).   Anyone with information on Ms. Dafoe’s whereabouts is asked to contact the MHPS at 403-529-8481 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Medicine Hat man a risk to children

In accordance with Section 32 of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act of Alberta, the Medicine Hat Police Service is issuing the following public information and warning with regards to Christopher Thomas Paul Langridge.  Mr. Langridge is currently serving a 60 day intermittent sentence after being convicted of breaching his probation conditions and a Conditional Sentence Order stemming from the following convictions:

7 convictions of Robbery;
1 conviction of Disguise with Intent;
Sentenced 1 day concurrent on each charge. Served 876 days pre-custody.

1 conviction of Distribution of Child Pornography.
Sentenced 10 months. Served 2 months precustody.

The Integrated Threat and Risk Assessment Centre (I-TRAC) has categorized Christopher Langridge as being a “Moderate Risk” for targeted sexual violence towards children. Christopher Langridge is described as follows:

DOB: August 17, 1982 (32 years old)
Hair: Light brown
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 250 lbs
Complexion: Light

Christopher Langridge is currently bound by both a Probation Order and Peace Bond until May of 2016. The Medicine Hat Police Service will be monitoring the compliance of the following conditions listed on Christopher Langridge’s probation order and peace bond:

  • Report, as directed, to your probation officer.
  • Live where approved by your probation officer. Any change in address must be approved by your probation officer.
  • Remain in the Province of Alberta unless permission to leave is obtained from the court or your probation officer.
  • Attend assessments and participate and complete counseling, treatment or programming directed by your probation officer.
  • Do not possess, consume or purchase any intoxicating substances; including alcohol and any drug not prescribed by a doctor.
  • Do not enter any bar, wine shop, bar lounge, tavern or other place where the primary business is the sale of alcohol
  • Do not possess any weapon including a knife unless for culinary purposes or as needed for work.
  • Do not possess any adult or child pornography or erotica.
  • Do not be in the company of anyone under the age of 16 unless directly supervised by your either of his parents.
  • Do not reside with any child under the age of 16.
  • No to enter the home which is the residence of any child under the age of 16 years unless in the presence of the parent or guardian of such child have been informed of you criminal history.
  • Do not attend a public park or public swimming area where persons under the age of 16 years can reasonably be expected to be present, or a daycare, school ground or play ground.
  • Do not possess or use any computer or digital device that is connected or is capable of being connected to the internet; unless by permission by your probation officer for employment or educational purposes or when directly supervised by his parents.
  • Do not attend any internet cafĂ© or commercial establishment whose primary business is the provision of public internet access.


After careful consideration of all related issues, including community safety and the privacy concerns of the offender and his family, the Medicine Hat Police Service has issued this notification of the release of Christopher Langridge.

Violent offender Matthew Boyes released in Calgary area

The Calgary Police Service is issuing the following public information and warning in regards to the release of an inmate, in the interest of public safety.

Matthew Adrian BOYES, 43, is in the Calgary area having served a two year federal prison sentence for breaching conditions of his last 810.2 Peace Bond. He will now be monitored by the Calgary Police Service High Risk Offender Program, bound by conditions of a recognizance.

BOYES has past manslaughter and assault convictions in Edmonton and Calgary, dating back to 1990.

The public is warned that BOYES has a history of violent offences. He has been violent against strangers, people known to him, and peace officers.  In the past, he has shown that his danger level may be increased when he is intoxicated by alcohol and/or drugs.

BOYES is described as Aboriginal, 6’ tall, 210 lbs., with black hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion.

Matthew Adrian BOYES was released to the Calgary area Monday, Oct. 20, 2014.

The Calgary Police Service is issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation and consideration of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community of the release of BOYES.

Members of the public are advised that the intent of the process is to enable members of the public to take suitable precautionary measures and not to embark on any form of vigilante action.

Suspect sought in fatal Valleyview hit and run

At 11:55 pm on Sunday October 19 2014 Valleyview RCMP received a complaint of a female lying in the north bound lane of 69 Road.  The location is approximately two KM south of Highway 43 and the Calais Store on the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Reserve.  A 22 year old female from Sturgeon Lake Alberta has been identified as the victim.  The investigation so far leads RCMP to believe the female was struck by a vehicle.   The Valleyview RCMP are asking for the public's help in identifying the driver and vehicle who did not remain on scene.  The name of the victim will not be released.

The Valleyview RCMP are looking for a dark colored pick up truck possibly with an extended cab.  This truck may be involved in the Fatal Hit and Run.  The Valleyview RCMP would like to ask for the public's help in locating this vehicle and the driver.

If anyone has any information on who may have been traveling down 69 Road south of Highway 43 and the Calais Store around midnight Sunday night are asked to call the Valleyview RCMP at 780-524-3345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477)

Medicine Hat Police Service weekend review

October 17 to 19, 2014 in review - The MHPS received 270 calls for service and held 38 individuals in custody for various offences incl: assault, possession for the purpose of trafficking, warrants, impaired driving, dangerous driving, theft, breach of court orders, public intoxication,  forcible confinement, shoplifting and possession of stolen property. Calls of note: On Friday October 17 a blue Ford Mustang was driving N on South Ridge Dr SE when the driver lost control, the vehicle left the road and came to rest in front of a residence on. Damage is estimated at $5000 and driver was charged with dangerous driving. On Saturday October 18 a 2012 Silverado truck reported stolen from Terrace Pl NE was recovered on Hatcher Dr NE. On Sunday October 18 a B&E was reported to a residence on Cooney Rd SE. and a B&E was attempted at a residence on N Railway St SE.

Edmonton CBSA 3rd quarter highlights

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share a sample of its third quarter highlights (July – September) from its various operations in Edmonton, including airport, commercial, and inland operations. This sampling underscores the CBSA’s commitment to keeping communities safe and ensuring our laws are respected.

Two foreign nationals were issued deportations orders this quarter and removed from Canada: in July an Eastern European man was removed and in August a California woman was also removed – both for criminality. Both are permanently barred from returning to Canada.

On August 5, officers seized 2 kg of khat from a suspicious shipment destined to Edmonton. Upon opening the parcel, officers noted nine bundles of braided rope as declared, but concealed in the middle of each bundle was khat wrapped in cloth. The investigation is ongoing.

On August 11, Detector Dog Max indicated on a couple travelling from China. They declared dry food and spices

but upon examination of their suitcase, officers found undeclared eggs, milk and pies – which were seized for destruction. Officer s also found $32,000 in undeclared currency, a $5,600 purse and a $3,000 gold ring. The couple was issued a $2,700 penalty for not declaring the goods and a $2,500 penalty for not declaring the currency.

On September 5, officers seized 660 grams of steroids from a parcel of chargers destined to an Edmonton address. Officers were suspicious with the parcel and upon opening it contained goods as declared, however officers removed a cover from one charger and noted 45 vials of white powder inside. The drugs were seized and the investigation is ongoing.

On September 26, Detector Dog Max showed interest in a traveller form the U.S. Further examination revealed the man had not declared his food items, and had also failed to declare over $10,500 in cash. The food was held for destruction and the man was issued a $250 penalty for not declaring the currency.

Calgary CBSA 3rd quarter highlights

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to share a sample of its third quarter highlights (July – September) from its various operations in Calgary, including airport, commercial, and inland operations. This sampling underscores the CBSA’s commitment to keeping communities safe and ensuring our laws are respected.

Officers seized $30,000 in jewelry and gems, on July 3, concealed in a courier shipment containing six loose diamonds, two loose pearls, a diamond bracelet and diamond ring. The importer was issued a penalty of $8,700 for failing to declare the goods.


On August 8, 11 baby turtles were saved from a shipment destined to Calgary. Officers were suspicious the envelope did not contain a book as declared. The turtles measured 1.5 inches in diameter. 

On September 2, a traveller was returning with owl meat, dried fish, tree bark, and nuts from Nigeria. The traveller failed to declare food and plants products. Officers seized the owl meat and bark and issued the traveller a $1,300 penalty.

On September 5, two pastry chefs were refused entry as they were coming to work in a Calgary restaurant without authorization. Background checks revealed their employer has not obtained permission to hire them, nor had the chefs applied for work permits. They returned back to their country.

Ohio man sentenced in gun smuggling incident at Carway

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that Daniel E. Helton, 51, of Goshen, Ohio, was convicted of smuggling pursuant to the Customs Act on October 15 in Lethbridge Provincial Court. He received a $6,000 fine, 10-year weapons prohibition, and forfeiture of seized items.



On July 20, 2014, Helton sought entry to Canada at the port of Carway, Alberta. Officers found an undeclared, loaded .40 calibre pistol concealed inside his vehicle. He was arrested and released on recognizance pending his court appearance.

Argument in Airdrie results in serious injuries, arrest

On 17 October 2014, at approximately 10:40 pm, Airdrie RCMP responded to a call of a fight in the Big Springs Neighbourhood of Airdrie.

On arrival police and Provincial Emergency Medical Services found one male on the ground unconscious suffering serious head injuries. The male was transported to a Calgary area hospital.

Airdrie General Investigative Section and RCMP Forensic Identification Service were contacted to assist. Witness statements lead to the location and arrest of one male suspect.

Edward Christopher YPMA, 42, of Airdrie was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault. YPMA was held at Airdrie Detachment for a bail hearing and is currently in custody.

Structure fire in Lethbridge

On October 18, 2014 at approximately 6:23 pm Lethbridge RCMP was dispatched to a structure fire to a private residence located at Hwy 843 and Township Road 9-4 in Lethbridge County.  Lethbridge Fire Department and Lethbridge EMS were also on scene.  The lone occupant of the house in this fire was treated and released for smoke inhalation and there was extensive damage to the property.

The cause of this fire in still under investigation but is considered to be non suspicious at this point in time.  The Alberta Fire Investigations Office has taken the lead role in determining the cause.  Further details will be released as they become available.

Fort Chipeweyan structure fire under investigation

During the early morning hours of Saturday October 18th at approximately 3:08 am, Fort Chipewyan Volunteer Fire Department and Fort Chipewyan RCMP were called to a structure fire at Chadi’s Restaurant in Fort Chipewyan. When emergency services arrived on scene the entire roof of the building was fully engulfed in flames.

Through the efforts of the Fort Chipewyan Volunteer Fire Department, the fire was extinguished and no other buildings were affected. Unfortunately, the restaurant was completely destroyed but luckily there were no injuries as a result of this incident.

In conjunction with the RCMP, the Fire Scene Examiner for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo attended the scene; the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Fort Chipewyan RCMP is asking anyone who may have witnessed the fire to please contact the detachment at 780-697-3665.

Maskwacis man faces homicide charges in death of teen

At approximately 10:30 pm on August 8, 2013, Hobbema RCMP responded to a call where a female had been stabbed in a residence on the Hobbema town site.   A 19 year old female was transported to Wetaskiwin Hospital, however shortly thereafter succumbed to her injuries.  She was pronounced deceased at the hospital.  An autopsy was conducted confirming the cause of death as homicide.

On October 17, 2014 Hobbema RCMP and Major Crime investigators arrested 35 year old, Charmaine Cheralee Louis-Crier of Maskwacis.  Louis-Crier has been charged with 2nd Degree murder contrary to Sec, 231 of the Criminal Code.

Louis-Crier remains in custody and will appear in Wetaskiwin Court Room 102 on Tuesday October 21, 2104 at 9:30 am.

Fatal MVC near Vermilion

On October 19 at approximately 5:30pm Vermilion RCMP, Fire, EMS and STARS were called to a single vehicle collision on Highway 631 at Range Road 114.

A 61 year old male driver had been operating the vehicle when he lost control and the vehicle rolled.  One passenger, a 47 year old female succumb to her injuries on scene and she was pronounced deceased.  The five other occupants were all children and one of them who is eight years old was transported to an Edmonton area hospital by STARS in serious condition.

Police continue to investigate the collision and have utilized the services of an RCMP Collision Re-constructionist.  The section of highway was re-opened at approximately 11:30pm.

It is unknown at this time if any charges will be laid and any other contributing factors.  Police are not releasing the names of any occupants until families have been notified.

Motorcyclist killed in Hwy 63 collision

One person is dead following a collision between a motorcycle and a recreational trailer.  The collision took place at approximately 4:30pm on October 19 on Highway 63 at Twp 705.  The recreational trailer was southbound followed by the motorcycle.  When the trailer slowed to make a left hand turn, the motorcycle was unable to slow in time to avoid a collision.

The collision caused the closure of Highway 63 at KM32 for nearly six hours with traffic being rerouted to Highway 831.  The collision took place on an undivided section of Highway 63 south of Wandering River.

The 49 year old male driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead on scene.  The name of the Onoway resident is not being released.

Investigators are working at determining the cause of the collision.  Factors such as speed and alcohol have not been ruled out.

Investigators are looking for witnesses to this collision.  Traffic at the time of this incident was heavy.  If anyone witness this occurrence they are encouraged to contact the RCMP.

Power pole hit and run in Two Hills

On October 18, 2014, Two Hills RCMP received a call reporting a hit and run to a power pole. During the early afternoon hours a large truck was turning from 50th (Ed Stelmach) Avenue on to Highway 855. The truck did not make a wide enough turn and took down a power pole causing a power outage in the community and considerable expense to make the repairs.

Within a span of just under 12 hours on Sunday, October 19th, Wood Buffalo RCMP entered into two unrelated investigations where pedestrians were injured as a result of being struck by a vehicle.
At approximately 6:03 am, police responded to a report of a man being struck by a vehicle on Millennium Drive at Chestnut Way. The driver of the vehicle, a blue Ford Explorer SUV, did not stop and fled the scene. With the assistance of witnesses who gave descriptions of the vehicle and driver, the Ford Explorer was located at Diversified Bus lines parking lot near Taiganova Drive. The male driver of the vehicle was arrested by police at the same location.
The 53 year old victim, from Red Deer, sustained non-life threatening injuries. He was treated and released from hospital. Charges against the 47 year old driver from Fort McMurray are pending as this investigation continues.
Later in the day at approximately 4:55 pm, a 20 year old Fort McMurray woman was struck in a crosswalk by a Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck at the intersection of Prospect Drive and Riverstone Ridge. The woman who sustained leg and arm injuries was riding her bicycle at the time of the collision and was transported to hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Charges are pending against a 41 year old Fort McMurray man who was driving the pick-up truck.
Once again, Wood Buffalo RCMP is reminding the public of the importance of intersection safety and the responsibility that goes with it.

Man dies after 11 story fall in Fort McMurray

On Saturday October 18th, at approximately 6:50 pm, Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a report of a person who fell from an eleventh story balcony at Tower 2 apartment building complex on MacDonald Drive in Fort McMurray. When police arrived on scene, Emergency Services First Responders were performing CPR on a man. The 27 year old man from Fort McMurray was transported to hospital where he was pronounce deceased.
Wood Buffalo RCMP investigators have been speaking to witnesses and it appears the death was accidental. The investigation will continue in order to speak with further witnesses. Police will not be releasing man’s name out of respect for his family.

Assault with a weapon in Medicine Hat

At about 7:55 pm On October 20, 2014, police and EMS were dispatched to a complaint of an assault in progress in the 100 Block of South Railway Street SE. Upon arrival, police found an unconscious male, with undetermined injuries, and learned that the suspect had fled the scene prior to police arrival.
At about 8:13 pm, as a result of a police K9 track, the accused was apprehended in the bush behind the YMCA Learning Centre.
The Medicine Hat Police Service has a 38 year old male in custody that is facing the following charges:
  • Section 267(1) of the Criminal Code  - Assault with a Weapon
  • Section 88(1) of the Criminal Code - Possession of a Weapon
  • Section 351(1) of the Criminal Code - Possession of Break-in Tools
  • Section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code - Possession of Stolen Property
  • The victim is currently in the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with undetermined injuries.
The investigation into this incident continues.

Collision results in injuries, charges for Medicine Hat cyclist

On  October 20, 2014 at 5:35pm Emergency Crews respondedto the intersection of Red Deer Dr SW at 6 St SW to a bicyclist vs vehicle collision.

As a result of an investigation by the police service Traffic Unit, it was determined that the 74 year old male bicyclist had crossed the Trans-Canada Highway Eastbound on  7 St SW against a red light.  When the cyclist approached the intersection  at 6 St SW he attempted to turn left onto Red Deer Dr and struck the passenger side of a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire that was Southbound on Red Deer Dr with a green light. 

The bicyclist was transported to Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with minor injuries.  The bicyclist was charged with failing to obey a red light.
