Canyon School update: Gardens, pumpkins, a tug of war, and volunteers needed for playground build

Canyon School in Pincher Creek held an assembly on Thursday October 9. The Mathletics Awards were given out by Mr. Dietze, Safety Patrol prizes were awarded, and the kids watched a video on being positive. There was a huge display of pumpkins on the stage, grown by Mr. Cody Johnson's 4th grade class. His current fourth graders harvested the garden,  which included enough pumpkins for every class to get their own. This would not have been possible without the efforts of planting done in the spring by his last grade four students, including Dalton and Kalvin. Dalton said "It was a really good experience to plant the garden." The highlight of the assembly was the big tug of war between the male and female staff to commemorate that the students had earned more than their benchmark of $3,500 for the Terry Fox Cancer Run. Mrs. Sylvia Riedel announced that they had received $360 that day, reaching a total of $4,482.90.

The students were very excited to see this event.  Student Justin Schoening said that they had done calculation in math class to to try to determine the outcome ahead of time, calculating average weight, and number of participants on each side of the rope, proving that any occasion can be used as an educational tool.  The results of this exercise:  The calculation that the women were likely to become the victors of the tug of war.

Although it was touch and go for a few moments, the women inexorably brought the men over to their side, thus winning the friendly war.  Mr. Dietze said that at one point during the competition, "I  had no traction, I was just being dragged along."

PULL!
Volunteers needed

One of the more urgent items on the agenda for Canyon is a big improvement for the school that requires a lot of hands on deck.  Canyon School is looking for volunteers that can help with building a new playground on October 23, 24, and 25. The school needs 30 volunteers for each of the three days. Contact the school to volunteer by phone at 403-627-3118 during school hours.
