Coach Tom Holoboff
After a brief delay due to our flirt with winter, the Peewee Mustangs finally started their season in Raymond on Thursday night. Raymond was a good test for the Mustangs to establish where they sit in the talent pool.
Raymond started the game with the ball, running right up the middle straight into Gus "The Meat" Halibert, Ty "Real Deal" Anderson, and "Gunner" Trent Metcalfe, who with the assistance of Lance "Cutter" Palao at middle linebacker and "Catman" Caleb Jones and Curtis "Ironman" Giesbrecht at outside linebacker soon made Raymond realize that was not a good idea. With two rookies playing corner in Gareth "Eyes" Kaack and Johnny "Flash" Parker, Raymond did have a little initial success with the outside run, but these two proved to be quick studies plus with the assistance of "Calculating Conner" Saulnier and Justin "Equalizer" Nelson at half back the outside run became limited. The safeties of Evan "Hitman" Malhi, Carter "Can" Neufeld-Shea, Brodie "Bullet" Walter and Joseph "The Silencer" Yellow Face mopped up any run that got passed the line, plus limited Raymond to one successful pass.
Offense for the Mustangs was hit and miss, with the misses seeming to halt promising drives. Gunner Trent Metcalfe made his first start at quarter back, sharing the QB duties with Bullet Brodie Walter. Cutter Lance Palao picked up where he left off last year at running back making good hard runs up the middle. Evan Hitman Malhi and Johnny Flash Parker made some nice runs off the right side behind the blocking of the line made up by "Smilin" Eric Lynk, Curtis Ironman Giesbrecht, Ty Real Deal Anderson, Gus The Meat Halibert, Justin The Equalizer Nelson, Calculating Conner Saulnier and Gareth Eyes Kaack. Unfortunately for Catman Caleb Jones each time his number was called there was one of those famous misses that we spoke of earlier so he never got to handle the ball this day.
Raymond was able to maintain one drive in both the first and second half of the game, winning two touchdowns to 0 against the mighty Mustangs. Coach Tom was impressed with all the players. Many players were seeing their first game action and followed their coaches teaching to the best of their ability. They all tried their hardest and never once was a disheartened word spoken. All in all a good game against a good opponent.
On another note my heart goes out to a Peewee Mustang alumni playing for the Bantam Mustangs. Jordan "Hands" Hochstein broke his leg on Thursday playing hard-nosed football. Sometimes a player leaves a special mark on the coaches heart and Jordan was one of those players. Jordan always plays the game with pure Mustang Try and gives 110% every time he is on the field. I know he will have a speedy recovery and will be ready to give his all again next year. Healthy recovery "Hands", look forward to watching you try to play on crutches.
Until next week this is Coach Tom reminding everyone that every day is a great day for football.
The Peewee Mustangs are scheduled to play their second game of the season, this one at home at Matthew Halton field on Thursday evening, September 25.
