On Sunday September 7th, 2014 at about 3:30 am Morinville RCMP received a complaint of a possible hit and run on Alexander First Nation. It was reported that some time earlier in the morning someone may have been hit by a vehicle while walking on the gravel road about 2 km north of Hwy 642 on Range Road 272 at Alexander First Nation. Police attended the scene and found a male from Alexander in the ditch. EMS were called to the scene and the male, 28 yr old Ian CARDINAL from Alexander, was declared dead at the scene.
Morinville RCMP members remain in the community dealing with the family and continuing to investigate this incident. There have been no suspects identified at this time. It is unknown at this time if alcohol was a factor in this collision. Road conditions were good at the time.

The motorcyclist failed to yield for a semi truck and trailer unit that was making its way through the circle, and hit the trailer unit. The motorcyclist was killed instantly and traffic was routed around the location for a short period of time. RCMP are continuing their investigation and the deceased's name is withheld pending N.O.K. notification.

On Saturday September 6, 2014 at approximately 8:30 pm, Fort Vermilion RCMP were called to single vehicle motor vehicle collision involving injuries on Highway 88 in MacKenzie County, Alberta. The vehicle, a pick-up truck, left the road and rolled. Two males and one female occupant of the vehicle were transported to hospital for treatment where one male later succumbed to his injuries.
The collision occurred on a straight, paved section of highway. It was raining at the time of the collision and the investigation has revealed alcohol was a factor.
The driver of the vehicle Lola Maureen Cardinal, aged 42, of Grande Prairie, Alberta has been released from hospital and has been charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle causing Death, Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle causing Bodily Harm, Operation of a Motor Vehicle while Exceeding the legal limit of .08 and Driving while Prohibited from doing so. The name of the deceased is not being released at the request of the next of kin. The second passenger was also released from hospital. Lola Cardinal will appear in Fort Vermilion Provincial Court on September 16, 2014.

On September 7, 2014 at 5:30 am Olds RCMP were dispatched to a serious collision on QE 2 northbound lanes south of Bowden at a rest stop. Olds Fire and Emergency Services also attended the scene.
Investigation revealed that a light blue 1995 Buick Riviera traveling north bound ran into the rear of a Semi tractor trailer parked at the rest stop with its lights on. The tractor trailer was pulled off the travel portion of the hwy and legally parked. The driver of the Buick a 23 year old male and a unidentified female passenger were deceased at the scene when police arrived. The driver of the Semi was not injured and no charges will be laid against anyone. Alcohol was not a factor in this collision.
The north bound lanes of QE 2 were closed for approximately 5 hours while the investigation was being conducted. Further information will be released once next of Kin notification is completed.
Murder charge for mother of 9 yr old

Laura Coward, age 47, has been charged with First Degree Murder in the death of her daughter 9 year-old Amber Lucius whose body was found in a vehicle on a rural road near Sundre on September 2nd. Coward was found in the vicinity of the vehicle and arrested by the RCMP that day. She remains in custody. Until recently, Coward was a resident of the Millet area.
Coward was to appear in Didsbury Provincial Court via CCTV this morning at 9:30 to face one count of Break and Enter and Commit Theft and one count of Abduction in Contravention of a Custody Order. Instead, these charges were replaced and she appeared on the charge of First Degree Murder.

I am devastated by the tragic loss of my innocent, sweet and lovely daughter. My heart is broken. The time I had with Amber was cut short but the time I had with her will always be the most special time of my life.
Amber’s death comes as a terrible shock to all those who had the honour of knowing her, including her family and friends. This loss is felt by our entire community.
Amber was lots of fun. A parent never knows when a child may be taken from them, so I urge you to make the time to have fun with your children, and never take them for granted.
I want to thank the community for all the support I have received since I got this terrible news.
We will be holding a private funeral to mark Amber’s passing later this week.
We thank the media for respecting our privacy and ask that they do not attend the funeral. I also ask that the reporters refrain from making inquiries at Amber’s school.
The circumstances surrounding Amber’s death are still under police investigation and they will be sharing that information with the public as they see fit.
I am providing a picture of Amber and ask that it be used in any media coverage related to her death.

Suicide near Sundre
Sundre RCMP
On September 7, 2014 at approximately 3:45 pm, Members of the Sundre RCMP Detachment responded to a complaint of a male who was threatening to harm himself and armed with a firearm. Police responded, with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team. Upon arrival at the rural residence, located North of Sundre, the male was found deceased. Cause of death to be determined and confirmed, pending an autopsy scheduled for later this week. Foul play is not suspected.
The family of the deceased are requesting that the name of the male not be released. The 57 year old male was from the Sundre area.
Pilot uninjured in Kananaskis plane crashKananaskis RCMP
On September 7 at 1:50 pm Kananaskis RCMP were dispatched to a mayday call from a plane over the Kananaskis Lakes. Shortly after the RCMP were updated that the plane had experienced engine failure but was able to safely land on Highway 40 near the Kananaskis Lakes Trail. RCMP and fire crews responded to the scene. The experienced pilot was the lone occupant of the aircraft, which was traveling from Springbank airport to Sparwood, B.C. He was not injured and the aircraft didn't sustain any damage from the landing.

Brooks bobcat mischief
Brooks RCMP are currently investigating a mischief which occurred sometime overnight between August 27, 2014 and early AM August 28th ,2014 at a rural construction site located North of Township Road 182. During this time, an unknown person(s) caused damage to two parked Bobcats.
Four men face multiple charges in Whitecourt

In the evening hours of Saturday, September 6th 2014 members of the Whitecourt RCMP Detachment on patrol observed several suspicious vehicles coming and going from a remote site near Groat Creek Road.
Further investigation resulted in the arrests of four men and the recovery of several stolen items. The items recovered include two vehicles, three ATVs, two travel trailers, one utility trailer, one motorcycle, several license plates, multiple power tools, and one firearm.
Oakley James PELLAN, 20, of Peace River, Albert has been charged with one charge of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000 and one count of Driving While Unauthorized. He was released on $3000 no-cash bail.
Steven Allen SOUCY, 25, of Slave Lake, Alberta has been charged with six counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, and three counts Failure to Comply with Conditions of Recognizance. SOUCY was remanded to custody.
Albert Rodney WAYE, 47, of Whitecourt, Alberta has been charged with five counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000, Possession of a Firearm Contrary to an Order, Possession of an Altered Firearm, and Possession of a Controlled Substance. WAYE has been remanded to custody.
Jesse Aaron DERKSON, 19, of Valleyview, Alberta has been charged with one count of Fail to Comply with Recognizance. He was released on $5000 no-cash bail.
All four men are scheduled to appear in Whitecourt Provincial Court on September 9.
Wood Buffalo Enforcement Day results

In conjunction with National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day held on Friday September 5th, Wood Buffalo RCMP Municipal Traffic Services along with their partners were out in force this weekend conducting check-stops within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The continuing mission is a commitment to make our roadways safer. Partners include the Integrated Traffic Unit which consists of RCMP members and Alberta Sheriffs.
As a result, police report the following charges and suspensions:
6 Impaired Driving offences
4 Seventy Two Hour Suspensions
2 Twenty Four Hour Suspensions (alcohol related)
6 Twenty Four Hour Suspensions (drug related)
26 Speeding Tickets. Three offenders were travelling speeds of 162 km/h, 174 km/h, and 142 km/h all in a 70 km/h zone.
60 offence tickets issued including intersection and distracted driving offences including cell phone usage.
3 charges under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act. These were assisted by detachment’s Police Dog Service Unit. In one incident approximately 13 grams of cocaine was seized.
13 vehicles were towed for various infractions.

Brooks RCMP are currently investigating an on-going credit card fraud scheme that has been linked to several other southern Alberta communities.
With regards to the Brooks occurrences which occurred between the 7th of August 2014 and the 29th of August 2014, two subjects have been identified and charged.
Reginald EVELINE, of No fixed address, has been charged with 5 counts of Misuse Credit Card, contrary to section 342(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
Christopher TELLEVIK, of Calgary, Alberta, has been charged with 5 counts of Misuse Credit Card, contrary to section 342(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
As a result of locating and arresting the two individuals, it was discovered the two accused were responsible for similar incidents in Redcliff, Alberta during the weekend of August 29th, 2014 and September 1st, 2014. As a result of that investigation, the following charges were laid:
Reginald EVELINE, of No fixed address, has been charged with 2 counts of Misuse Credit Card, contrary to section 342(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada, and 4 counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, contrary to s.354(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
Christopher TELLEVIK, of Calgary, Alberta, has been charged with 2 counts of Misuse Credit Card, contrary to section 342(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada, and 4 counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, contrary to section 354(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
The investigation is still ongoing and further charges are pending.
Throughout the course of both investigations, it has been learned that the two males have been attending Gas Stations / Convenience Stores, making large purchases of gasoline, scratch lottery tickets, cigarettes, and other merchandise. The unusual purchases are the large quantities of scratch lottery tickets, usually in excess of $100 and $200. They are attending the same stores, on several occasions, within the same day. The credit cards are initially being approved, however, within a few weeks, the store are notified that the transaction was completed with a fraudulent card. In every circumstance, the credit card information on the face of the card is different than the information on the magnetic strip.
The Brooks RCMP are asking merchants to ensure they verify the numbers being printed out on the terminal receipt with the numbers on the face of the card. Also, verify the identity of the person using the card, with photo identification, if you suspect the purchase to be suspicious in nature.
It is believed these two individuals are responsible for a large number of fraudulent transactions along the Highway 9 and Highway 1 corridor between Calgary, Alberta and the Saskatchewan border.

In recent weeks, many Brooks and County of Newell residents have received phone calls informing them they have been approved for a loan or line of credit. The callers are requesting individual’s provide credit card numbers and/or other credit information to complete the loan and receive the funds.
RCMP would like to remind the public to not give out personal information on the phone. Providing personal information, including banking information to unknown sources over the phone can lead to identity theft. Sometime on the evening of August 16, 2014, thieves broke into the Race Track RV storage yard on East Lake Crescent. The suspects damaged a fence, locks and doors on RV’s, and stole televisions and barbeques from the units.

On Sunday September 7, 2014 at 1:15 p.m. two masked males broke into a residence located in Cold Lake and were confronted by the resident. One of the males had a handgun which is believed to have been a pellet gun. The other male had a hammer and attempted to hit the resident. Both masked men fled on foot shortly after. No one was injured. It is believed they were looking for money/drugs.
Suspect #1 is described as:
- Native male, 6'0" tall and 180 lbs.
- Wearing skull mask and Carhart jacket with black cuffs and zipper.
- Wearing designer jeans.

- Native male, similar build as suspect #1.
- Grey hoodie with a black neck warmer covering his face.
- Wearing designer jeans and NIKE basketball shoes.

The goal of this campaign is to work together to demonstrate the nation wide positive impact that the RCMP and their partners can have on public safety by working together towards a common goal.
As a result of this coordinated effort, the following is a summary of the suspensions, charges and violation tickets that were issued during the course of the Grande Prairie check stops:
