Three youths missing in the Peace River

Fort Vermilion RCMP

On Friday August 15, 2014 at 8:00 pm North Peace Tribal Police Services ( NPTPS ) of the Fox Lake First Nations and the Fort Vermilion RCMP officers responded to a call of three local male youths, aged 14, 15 & 16 years old, reported missing while swimming in the Peace River which runs adjacent to the community.

Initial investigation by NPTPS and RCMP indicates that the three youths were out for a family swim and were swimming near the edge of a shallow area of water. It appears a strong "Eddy" current may have caught the unsuspecting youths and all were drawn down into the river. Despite valiant efforts by bystanders the youth were not rescued.

The Fort Vermilion RCMP, NPTPS, local fire and rescue, Canadian Rangers, Alberta Sustainable Resource Department and community members have been patrolling the river, trying to recover the youths bodies since early Saturday morning. The body of the 14-year-old youth was recovered at 6:00 pm in proximity to the location where he had gone under. The remaining two youths have yet to be located. Alcohol was not a factor in this incident. The recovery effort is continuing with shoreline, water and air patrols.

Missing blood python in Spruce Grove

Spruce Grove RCMP

The Spruce Grove RCMP are currently investigating a case of a missing Blood Python in the area of Aspenglen. The python belongs to a Spruce Grove man, who reported to police that the snake had escaped from his home.

Police, in partnership with Alberta Fish and Wildlife and Spruce Grove Municipal Enforcement, have consulted with reptile experts and have learned that this particular snake poses virtually no threat to public safety. It is not considered offensive in nature and is likely hiding away from populated areas attempting to stay warm. The climate in Alberta is not hospitable for a python and the snake will not survive long if it remains outside.

Although experts advise that the chances of finding the python are very low, police are asking anyone who spots the animal, not approach it and contact the Spruce Grove RCMP Detachment complaint line at (780) 962-2222.

The snake is three feet in length with orange, brown and black markings.

Two arrested after ramming cruiser and fleeing RCMP

Red Deer RCMP

A report of suspicious activity in a parking lot in the Highland Green neighbourhood led to a string of smashed vehicles as two suspects attempted unsuccessfully to flee from Red Deer RCMP in the early morning hours of August 17. It began just before 1:00 am when a citizen reported that someone driving a truck was trying to get into other vehicles in the parking lot; Red Deer RCMP responded and discovered the suspect truck had a stolen license plate. The RCMP officer positioned the police cruiser behind the parked truck and approached the driver’s side. At that point, the truck reversed and repeatedly rammed the police vehicle before speeding from the parking lot; the truck struck several parked vehicles and a moving one before colliding with a tree in another residential yard. The male driver and female passenger ran from the truck.

Red Deer RCMP located the woman a short time later, hiding in the back yard of a residence. RCMP police dog services tracked the man to a wooded area off a walking path leading down the hill toward the Riverside Meadows neighbourhood. The woman and man were both taken into custody without further incident.

The RCMP officer whose cruiser was rammed by the suspects was not injured during this series of events, and neither was the driver of the moving vehicle struck by the truck. RCMP do not have an estimate of the damage to the police cruiser at this time.

35 year old Daniel Edward Apetrea of Red Deer, Alberta has been charged with:
  • Criminal Code 270(1)(a) – Assault on police officer with weapon

Single MVC near Airdrie

Airdrie RCMP

On Sunday, August 18th, 2014 at 9:22 PM, members of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU), Airdrie RCMP, Fire and Ambulance attended a single vehicle roll over collision on Highway 2 near Airdrie.

The collision occurred in the northbound lanes of Highway 2, about half a kilometre south of the Yankee Valley Blvd overpass.

A Grey 2004 GMC Sierra pickup was travelling northbound on Highway #2 when the driver lost control of the truck, rolling into the east ditch.

It appears that the passenger, a 49-year old Airdrie male was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected during the collision. He was transported to hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the truck, also a 49-year old Airdrie male, was transported to hospital with undermined injuries.

RCMP would like to thank all of the witnesses who stopped at the scene to assist. Any additional witnesses, who have not yet provided a statement to the RCMP are asked to call or attend the Airdrie RCMP Detachment (403)945-7200.

Northbound traffic in the area was reduced to one lane while emergency crews completed their investigation and cleaned up the scene. An RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist was called to the scene to examine the physical evidence.

Speed, alcohol and the lack of use of a seatbelt all appear to have been factors in the severity of this collision. All three of these factors are among the top priorities of the Integrated Traffic Units in Alberta.

Integrated Traffic Units consist of RCMP Traffic Services members and Sheriff Highway Patrol officers working together in a collaborative effort to deliver effective and efficient traffic safety services to Albertans, with a focus on identified enforcement priorities.
