Man dies in Cochrane after falling from ladder

July 18th, 2014 at 12:50 pm Cochrane RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of a 51 year old male who fell off a ladder at Cochrane Crescent. Upon arrival police were able to determine that the victim was at a friends home and had been assisting with roof repairs over the last week. The victim was in the process of climbing a ladder onto the roof when he fell. The victim was taken to the Foothills Medical Centre by ambulance where he later died from his injuries. Fatigue from the previous weeks work on the roof may have contributed to the accident. No charges are forthcoming from this incident.

LRPS charge man in connection with stolen trucks

Lethbridge Regional Police have charged 48-year-old man with multiple counts of possession of stolen property in connection with the theft of Ford trucks in June and July.

In late June and July police responded to a number of thefts involving Ford F350 trucks. Following an investigation by members of the Priority Crimes Unit a male suspect was subsequently identified. On July 21, 2014 police located and arrested the male without incident.
Richard John Dewar, 48, of Lethbridge, is charged with three counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000 (trucks), two counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000 (license plates) and one count of driving while disqualified.

Dewar is scheduled to appear in court August 8.
Investigation into the matter is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time.

Edmonton south side homicide
Detectives asking witnesses to turn in video of incident

The autopsy on the man who was shot and died on Sunday, July 20, 2014, has been completed. The Medical Examiner completed the autopsy Tuesday afternoon, and it has been determined that Alor Arop Deng, 27 died from gunshot wounds. The death has now been deemed a homicide and detectives continue to investigate.

The EPS is asking witnesses to come forward with information, especially those who may have captured the incident on their mobile phone video camera at the scene.

“We have information that several people used their mobile phones to videotape what happened at the scene that morning,” says Staff Sgt. Brad Goeson of Homicide Section. “We want those individuals to do the right thing, and come forward to police with information.”

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday the EPS received a report of a shooting in the area of 104 Street and 81 Avenue. The man who was shot, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

Man assaulted in NW Calgary
The Calgary Police Service is investigating an assault that occurred outside a northwest home and left a man with several injuries.
At approximately 5:45 am on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, a man was leaving for work in the 9900 block of Hidden Valley Drive N.W., when it’s alleged he was approached by a man with a gun. The gunman attempted to force the victim back into his home, however, the victim resisted. Several other men, who also had guns, jumped into the fray and all four began to assault the victim.

After a short struggle, the victim was able to break free and run from the offenders. The four men ran in the opposite direction, fleeing in a light-coloured car.
The suspects in this case are described as black men in their late 20s or early 30s.

The victim in this case is not being co-operative with investigators, however, it is believed others in the neighbourhood may have seen or heard the commotion. This is not believed to be a random incident.

Violent assault in SW Calgary

The Calgary Police Service is seeking public assistance in identifying a man responsible for an unprovoked violent assault over the weekend.

At approximately 2 a.m., on Sunday, July 20, 2014, a 25-year-old man was with his friends in the 200 block of 12 Avenue S.W., when he was approached and punched in the face by an unknown man.

The victim and the suspect did not know one another, nor did they have a prior dispute. In this case, it is believed the assault was motiveless and perhaps a case of mistaken identity.

The victim was taken to a local hospital by his friends, where police were called. He sustained serious injuries to his face which required surgery.

The suspect left the area with a female. He is described as approximately 27 to 30 years old, 5’9” tall, 200 to 220 pounds, with a muscular build. He had short, almost balding reddish brown hair, and a two-to-three-inch reddish brown beard. He was wearing a tight white T-shirt.

The woman was approximately 5’6” tall, 115 pounds, with long dark hair and tanned skin. She was wearing a black shirt.

Several others were also present during the assault.

Driver charged in fatal Edmonton pedestrian collision

The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigation Section has completed their investigation into a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred in a crosswalk in west Edmonton in late May.

Bradley Nordell, 42, has been charged with careless driving and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk.

Background:
At approximately 4:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014, a 73-year-old female had entered a marked crosswalk and was crossing the merge lane from the south to the north curb adjacent to the 95 Avenue and 170 Street intersection. A Toyota Tundra traveling eastbound on 95 Avenue turned right into the merge lane that connects to southbound 170 Street, and struck the female as she was crossing. EMS treated and transported the woman to hospital in serious condition. The woman succumbed to her injuries and passed away during the early morning hours of Sunday, June 1, 2014. The 42-year-old male driver of the truck did not report any injuries. The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit was called in to investigate the fatal pedestrian collision. This was Edmonton’s third pedestrian fatality and 10th traffic fatality for 2014.

Multi-vehicle collision in Strathcona County

On July 23 at approximately 4:00 pm Strathcona County RCMP and Strathcona County Emergency Services responded to a multi vehicle collision in the construction zone area of Anthony Henday Drive (Hwy 216) just south of Yellowhead Highway in Strathcona County. Four vehicles were involved in the collision and a fifth vehicle was damaged by debris.

A 1995 Mack 600 gravel truck and a 2009 Toyota Corolla were both traveling north bound on Anthony Henday Dr, when the Mack truck rear ended the Corolla, causing it to strike the cement median. The Corolla then spun around and struck another north bound vehicle, a 2010 GMC Sierra, pushing it into another lane where the Sierra was then also struck by the Mack truck. Before coming to a stop the Corolla also struck a north bound 2014 Infinity QX50.

A 2004 Pontiac Mose mini van sustained minor damage from flying debris but was not actually involved in the collision.

The Corolla, Sierra and Mack truck all sustained extensive damage, while the Infinity sustained minor damage.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla, a 55 yr old male from Edmonton and the driver of the GMC Sierra, a 23 year old male from Kelowna, were both taken by ambulance to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The drivers of the Mack truck and the Infinity were not injured.

Speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision.

The north bound lanes of Anthony Henday Dr were closed for approximately 2 hours while Strathcona County RCMP Traffic Services investigated the collision. The lanes were re-opened at approximately 6:00 p.m.

The investigation continues and charges are pending.

The Strathcona County RCMP and it's traffic safety partners would like to remind motorists to obey traffic laws, slow down and not "RIP" through construction zones. Reduced speed limits in construction zones are in effect whether or not there are workers present, as hazards may still exist. Even if it seems there is no activity in a construction zone, there may be other less obvious hazards such as loose gravel chips and uneven pavement, sharp shoulders and removed guardrails or medians. All these hazards can be dangerous.

The RCMP also wishes to remind motorists that we respond to many collisions in Strathcona County in which there is unnecessary property damage, injury and tragic loss of life due to speeding and other driving offences. By increasing our public education and enforcement efforts, the RCMP aims to make our roadways safer for everyone. Don't RIP through construction zones.

Bike/backpack bandits suspected in spike of Edmonton garage break and enters

The Edmonton Police Service is warning residents in northeast Edmonton to lock their garages and report suspicious persons loitering in alleyways after a recent spike in break and enters.

Over the last two months, there have been 44 break and enters in the Montrose / Highland / Bellevue area, and 24 of those incidents were to garages. For the same time period in 2013, there were 26, and nine of those were to garages. Last week, there were nine break-ins to private garages, and three of those were on the same day within a few blocks of each other. All the incidents reportedly occurred overnight and many involve unlocked garage side doors.

The thieves are stealing small items such as tools, equipment, personal electronics, and bikes, but are often leaving larger more expensive items behind. Thieves are also rummaging through unlocked vehicles that are parked within garages and taking whatever they can carry out, including loose change.

“We’ve seen this before, and believe there may be several individuals involved, who may be travelling on bikes and wearing backpacks to carry the stolen property,” says Const. Keith Pitzel with EPS Northeast Division. “These are crimes of opportunity, and these thieves are looking for unlocked doors. Once inside your garage or house, they look for small valuables that can easily fit into their backpack, then they carry it off quickly with no one being the wiser.”
