Senior Hawks rugby team wins Sportsmanship award at Provincials

Pincher Creek's Senior Hawks Girls Rugby team participated in the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA) 2014 Provincials, held in Calgary on June 6 and 7.  The Hawks won the Sportsmanship banner for Tier 1 Girls.  A fitting end to the season (and for some their High School rugby career) for this vibrant group of young ladies, generally known for their sportsmanship in all sports, including on the often less than polite rugby pitch.


For the Hawks' first game they played Bev Facey Community High from Edmonton and lost 26-5.  Rebecca Lowry scored the try for the Hawks.  According to Coach Randy Whitehead, other than the first 10 minutes the girls played well and despite the size difference in schools they did not look out of place.

For their second game the Hawks played to a 24-5 loss to Holy Trinity Academy from Okotoks.  Maia Jorgensen scored the try for the Hawks.  According to Coach Whitehead "For this game the Hawks were tired and we didn't perform as good as we would have liked."

 In the Hawks'  third and final game of the tournament they played Strathcona from Edmonton and won 13-10 to finish 7th overall. The game was tied at the end 10-10, and drop kicks were used to determine the winner.  Hawks Jayden Kennedy and Taylor Wells scored a try each and Rebecca Lowry kicked the winning drop goal.

During provincial competitions the host school has a sportsmanship committee that observes teams and players both on and off the pitch. The Hawks girls won the Tier 1 provincial rugby sportsmanship award. They received a plaque to keep for a year and a banner to hang in the school. "As a coach I'm very proud of my girls as this is an award that's the ASAA takes seriously," said Coach Whitehead.  "Despite being in the higher tier the girls did not look out of place and were competitive with these bigger schools."
