Edmonton Senior struck in crosswalk dies

The Edmonton Police Service Traffic Section is investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that took place yesterday in a crosswalk in west Edmonton.

At approximately 4:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014, a 73-year-old female had entered a marked crosswalk and was crossing the merge lane from the south to the north curb adjacent to the 95 Avenue and 170 Street intersection. A Toyota Tundra traveling eastbound on 95 Avenue turned right into the merge lane that connects to southbound 170 Street, and struck the female as she was crossing. EMS treated and transported the woman to hospital in serious condition. The woman succumbed to her injuries and passed away during the early morning hours of Sunday, June 1, 2014. The 42-year-old male driver of the truck did not report any injuries.

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit continues to investigate what factors may have contributed to the pedestrian collision, however, speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors at this time. Charges are pending against the driver of the truck.

“This is an unfortunate reminder for motorists and pedestrians to always look out for one other on the roadways,” says Acting Staff Sgt. Gary Lamont with the EPS Traffic Section. “Pedestrian collisions happen way too often, and many pedestrians are struck when they are crossing the street with the right of way. It’s important that motorists and pedestrians pay attention and make eye contact with each other before moving forward. We share the roads and need to look out for each other.”

This is Edmonton’s third pedestrian fatality and 10th traffic fatality for 2014. Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.

LRPS to host cyber safety forum for parents

The Lethbridge Regional Police Service is hosting an internet safety session to help educate parents about cyber issues and provide tips to help prevent children from being victimized.

Internet and social media-related issues such as cyber bullying, sexting and child pornography are by far the biggest issues that local School Resource Officers address on a daily basis. Today’s children are able to access the internet 24/7 and are faced with issues their parents never encountered as youngsters. Children are very proficient online and in some cases know more about the cyber world than their parents.

Parents are invited to attend an internet safety educational session on June 3, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the Media Centre at Chinook High School, 259 Britannia Boulevard West. The session is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about online issues, crime and crime trends.

School Resource Officers will discuss current trends in our schools, the Forensic Identification Unit will be able to answer questions on device storage and data retrieval and the Internet Child Exploitation Unit will provide information on child pornography offences and trends.

EPS investigating brutal assault on homeless man

The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a brutal assault on a homeless man under the Victoria Trail Bridge, and is asking the public for any information that might help identify those responsible.

At approximately 12:24 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, an injured adult male was discovered by two passersby underneath the Victoria Trail Bridge in the Kennedale Ravine just north of Hooke Road. Police and EMS responding to the scene found a 43-year-old male suffering from what appeared to be an aggravated assault, with extensive injuries and a significant loss of blood. EMS treated and transported the man to hospital in serious condition.

Investigators learned the victim had no fixed address, and that he was allegedly assaulted by another adult male who may have been in the company of two others. The assailant is described as a Caucasian male, approximately 20-years-old, tall with a slim build, clean-shaven, with short blonde hair and blue eyes. Accompanying the male was a Caucasian female who wore blue pants and blue shirt with a zipped up jacket, and possibly another individual with no description.

“This appears to be a cowardly, unprovoked attack on a helpless man,” says Acting Det. Mark Rosenow with EPS Northeast Division. “We believe the man was struck repeatedly with an edged weapon of some kind, and from the nature of his injuries, he was most likely trying to defend himself. This man will be in hospital for some time recovering, and he’s lucky to be alive.”
