Louise Veillard found deceased

Update May 30: The Edmonton Police Service Missing Persons Unit has concluded the investigation into the disappearance of Louise Veillard.

At approximately 9:32 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2014, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services responded to a call from a woman walking in Rundle Park who reported seeing a body floating in the North Saskatchewan River. EFRS deployed two water rescue boats and pulled the body from the river and transported it to the Gold Bar Boat Launch. The body was then transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

On Friday, May 30, 2014, the Edmonton Medical Examiner identified the deceased as missing Edmonton woman Louise Veillard, 26. There are no indications of foul play and the death is considered to be non-criminal. As the death is considered non-criminal, no further information will be released by police.

Suncor employee killed by bear

On Wednesday May 7th, 2014 shortly after 2:00 pm, Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a report of a large black bear attacking and killing an employee at a Suncor Energy oil sands base camp approximately 25 kilometers north of Fort McMurray. Police along with Fish & Wildlife and EMS First Responders attend the scene where the employee was declared deceased. The male bear, still in the area, was shot and killed by RCMP members.

Wood Buffalo RCMP has turned the scene over to Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (AESRD) – Fish and Wildlife Division who will continue to investigate this unfortunate incident.

Although occurrences like this are rare, everyone has to be aware of the dangers involved when any wild animal is present whether in the bush or populated areas.

Police will not releasing any further information on the victim out of respect for the family. Notification to next of kin is continuing.

Wetaskiwin RCMP investigating Homicide

On May 7, 2014, Wetaskiwin RCMP, with the assistance of the RCMP Major Crimes Unit, charged Casey Lee LIGHTNING, a 48-year old man of Samson Cree Nation, with Second Degree Murder in the death of 33-year old Jonathon GREENE, also of Samson Cree Nation.

Jonathon GREENE received fatal stab injuries while sitting inside a local McDonald’s restaurant. Staff and nearby witnesses acted quickly to provide medical assistance to GREENE, however, the injuries suffered were too grave and he was pronounced deceased later that evening. Staff and witnesses also assisted greatly by identifying and locating LIGHTNING, who had fled the scene. With the assistance of the RCMP Police Dog Service, LIGHTING was located and arrested in an alleyway near the McDonald’s restaurant.

The police would like to thank the public for their assistance as this illustrates how serious investigations can be brought to timely resolutions thereby ensuring public safety with their cooperation.

Casey LIGHTNING was remanded and appeared in Wetaskiwin Provincial court earlier today. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 29, 2014, at 9:30 am.

RCMP investigation suggests that this homicide is not gang related. The Wetaskiwin RCMP, with the assistance of the RCMP Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Section continue to investigate this incident.

Suspects arrested after Hythe business owner interrupts break and enter

RCMP have arrested and charged a male and a female is facing similar charges after a person interrupted a break and enter to a business late Monday night.

Beaverlodge RCMP were called to a Hythe area business at approximately 11:35 p.m. on May 5th after a male and female were caught in the yard allegedly trying to steal fuel and break into the business. The person was able to detain the suspects for a short period of time but the suspect fled prior to police arriving. After learning that the male suspect had fled a perimeter was established to contain the suspect.

While waiting for a police dog service handler to arrive, a containment member stopped a vehicle and after entering into an unrelated investigation, arrested the driver impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The driver had a young child in the vehicle at the time of his arrest.

While a perimeter was being maintained, a witnessed called police to advise a white Chevrolet truck was seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed. RCMP officers patrolled to the area and a short time later located a vehicle matching the description and attempted a vehicle stop to which is aleged that the driver did not stop. The vehicle was not pursued and another area of containment was established.

The suspect vehicle was spotted again turning into a residential yard in the area of Highway 43 and Range Road 92. There, the driver fled on food. A police dog service handler, with the assistance of his dog conducted a track and located the suspect among some trees. Thereafter, the PDS officer and other police officers were able to take the suspect into custody. The male suspect was taken to a local area hospital for medical treatment after he was injured during the arrest, he has since been released into police custody.

Andrew THIBERT, a 25 year old male from Grande Prairie, is facing a total of 23 charges. He has been charged with 4 counts of possession of stolen property over $5000, 4 counts of possession of stolen property under $5000, break and enter, theft over $5000, flight from police and 8 charges under the Traffic Safety Act. THIBERT has been remanded into custody and will make his next court appearance on May 12, 2014 in Grande Prairie Provincial Court.

A 23 year old female from Wembley is facing similar charges but they have yet to be finalized or sworn and as such her name cannot be released. She is due to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court at a later date.

Grande Prairie RCMP investigating Aggravated Assault

Yesterday afternoon, at approximately 4:30 p.m. Grande Prairie RCMP and local EMS were called to the area of 101 Street and 101 Avenue in the downtown core of the city after a male was observed pleading for help and appearing to have suffered a slash wound. EMS transported the victim, a male in his 40's, to a local area hospital for further treatment. At the present time, Alberta Health Services is not releasing the condition of the victim.

RCMP continue to investigate.

Edmonton driver charged in fatal collision between tractor trailer and car

Edmonton Police Service Traffic Section officers have charged the driver of a car involved in a fatal collision with a tractor trailer, which claimed the life of the car’s passenger.

On Monday, April 28, 2014 EPS Downtown Division patrol officers responded to a report of a serious injury collision at Kingsway and Princess Elizabeth Avenue at approximately 5:40 p.m. It was reported by witnesses that a Honda Accord was travelling eastbound on Kingsway, when the car allegedly attempted a left-hand turn onto Princess Elizabeth Avenue. A Mack Tridem travelling westbound on Kingsway with the right-of-way struck the car in the intersection. The 27-year-old female driver of the car was treated and transported to hospital by EMS with minor injuries. EMS declared the 27-year-old male passenger of the car deceased on scene. The 27-year-old male driver of the tractor trailer did not report any injuries. This was Edmonton’s fifth traffic fatality for 2014.

Robin Denise Cort, 27, of Edmonton, was charged with Impaired Driving Causing Death, Over 80 mg % Causing Death, and Refusal Causing Death. Additional charges are pending the completion of the collision investigation.

Accused in Lethbridge shooting incident remanded in custody

A 24-year-old Lethbridge man charged in connection with a shooting incident Tuesday made his first court appearance today and was remanded in custody until his next appearance May 9 .

On May 6, 2014 at approximately 12:15 a.m. police responded to multiple 911 calls of shots fired in the area of Mt. Rundle Way and Mt. Rundle Road after a male armed with a baseball bat and firearm shot at a vehicle and residence. Several rounds were fired through the door of a home occupied by a family, but fortunately no one was injured. One round was also fired at a vehicle.

Police were quickly able to locate the subject and he was arrested without further incident. A baseball bat and long rifle were also recovered.

Investigation to date suggests that shooting appears to be a targeted incident stemming from a dispute earlier in the evening; however the subject targeted the wrong residence. There is no history of any problems or any current dispute between the accused and the family whose home was shot at, nor is there any connection between the accused and the vehicle that was damaged.

Jesse Dallas Hills, 24, of Lethbridge with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, use of a firearm while committing an offence, careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, discharging a firearm into a place, unauthorized possession of a firearm.

As the matter is before the courts no further details will be released.

First degree murder charges for two Calgary men

The Calgary Police Service has charged two men in relation to a homicide that occurred earlier this year.

At approximately 4 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, police were called to the 2000 block of 27 St. S.E., for reports of a man who was found deceased inside a residence. The man was identified as Dennis Manual BARREIRA, 46, of Calgary.

An autopsy confirmed that he was the victim of homicide. While not released at the time, the cause of death was determined to be strangulation.

It is believed this was not a random incident, and that two men had been invited into the victim’s residence. At least one of the men was known to him. It is alleged the two men went to the home with the intent of committing a robbery of cash, drugs and personal items, and that the death occurred sometime during this incident.

On Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at approximately 8 p.m., two men were arrested without incident in northeast Calgary. On, Wednesday, May 7, 2014, members of the CPS Homicide Unit charged Kyle Earl PATE-MILLER, 21, and Chad William Brian MONDOUX, 24, both of Calgary, with first-degree murder.

Both men were remanded into custody. PATE-MILLER will appear in court on Friday, May 16, 2014, and MONDOUX will appear on Tuesday, May 20, 2014.

RCMP Street Team seizes drugs in arrest of Airdrie man

On May 6, 2014 at approximately 8:00 pm, the Red Deer RCMP Street Team arrested an Airdrie man in Red Deer, Alberta. The arrest resulted in the seizure of significant amounts of cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA and cash. 21 year old Brandon James Webb of Airdrie was taken into custody without incident.

Brandon James Webb has been charged with:
  • Controlled Drug & Substances Act 5(2) – Possession for purpose of trafficking X 3
  • Criminal Code 355(B) – Possession of proceeds obtained by crime under $5,000
Webb made his first court appearance on May 8, 2014 at 9:30 am at Alberta Provincial Court in Red Deer and is scheduled to appear again on May 28, 2014 at 9:30 am at Alberta Provincial Court in Red Deer.

Numerous drug and weapons charges for 6 Calgarians

The Calgary Police Service has charged seven people with numerous drug and weapons charges, after an investigation that began with a reported home invasion.

On Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at approximately 11 p.m., CPS received a report of a home invasion in the community of Shawnessy.

Due to the nature of the incident, the CPS Guns and Gangs Unit conducted the ensuing investigation, working with a number of other areas within the Service. This led to a traffic stop in Copperfield during the early morning hours of Thursday, May 1, 2014, at which time a loaded 9-mm Ruger handgun and cash were seized.

Later that evening, five search warrants were executed on three residences and two vehicles in the community of Bridlewood.

As a result of the search warrants, 2.6 kilograms of marijuana was seized, along with a loaded 9-mm Glock handgun, body amour and $9,770 in cash.

In total, almost $12,000 in cash was located. The value of drugs seized is approximately $30,000.

The following people were charged as a result of this investigation:

Stephen Gregory LAFRAMBOISE, 26, of Calgary, was charged with one count each of trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a restricted/prohibited weapon with ammunition, hazardous storage of a firearm, and three breaches of recognizance.

Kirsten Marie STOLZ, 24, of Calgary, has been charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and one count each of unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a restricted/prohibited weapon with ammunition and hazardous storage of a firearm.

Christopher Joel TETZ, 25, of Calgary, has been charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and one count of possession of proceeds of crime.

Robert Brian LAFRAMBOISE, 28, and Thomas William BROWN, 25, both of Calgary, have been charged with one count each of unsafe transport of a firearm in a motor vehicle, unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition.

Scott Matthew BOBBET, 22, of Calgary, was charged with one count each of obstruction, identity fraud and utter to deal a forged document.

Ryan Ronald LITTLE, 32, of Calgary, was charged with two counts of possession for the purpose, and one count of possession of proceeds of crime.

The investigation into the home invasion is ongoing. This is not believed to be a random incident.
