Justice Minister statement on St. Paul shooting
Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General, issued this statement in response to the shooting in St. Paul yesterday:
“Today (May 9), I had the honour of attending events with RCMP officers where I spoke about the sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel across our province. Each and every day, when they leave for work, they don’t know dangers they may face, including if they will come home at the end of their shift.
"The terrible events this evening in St. Paul are a reminder of the very real dangers faced by law enforcement, as they put themselves at risk in the line of duty to protect and serve Albertans.
"I am also grateful to the many personnel who responded on scene, for their assistance.
"On behalf of Premier Hancock and all Albertans, I extend my thoughts and prayers to everyone and their families affected by this serious incident."

Wood Buffalo RCMP investigates vehicle break-ins and thefts
At approximately 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2014 Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a complaint of multiple vehicles being damaged in the underground parking garage located at 9604 Manning Ave in Fort McMurray. Canada Road Safety Week is May 13-19
May 13-19, 2014 will mark Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign aimed at making Canada's roads the safest in the world.
This campaign is a police initiative designed to remind people that an essential part of the enforcement job is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways. Educating the public about safe driving practices is a priority. The focus will be on behaviours that put drivers, passengers and other road users most at risk. These are: impaired driving, seat belt use, and all aspects related to aggressive and distracted driving. All enforcement agencies across the country have been invited to participate.
Sadly here in Grande Prairie, there have been too many deaths and serious injuries over the last number years related to vehicle
Canada Road Safety Week is sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and Transport Canada and is part of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2015, which has a goal of making Canada's roads the safest in the world by 2015.
RCMPTalks to Canada's youth about Impaired and Distracted Driving
The critical issues of impaired and distracted driving will be the next topic discussed at “RCMPTalks,” a series of live, interactive videoconferences taking place in classrooms across Canada.
On May 13th at 12 pm EST during National Road Safety Week, grade 11 and 12 students will converse with Shania Khan of MADD Canada who is the victim of an impaired driver, and Brad Gorski who was injured while driving and texting. Opening remarks will be made by RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson.
“A small decision can have great consequences,” says Commissioner Paulson. “Let's make the right choice before we get behind the wheel. Everyone has the right to come home safe.”
“RCMPTalks” allows students from six different Canadian classrooms to hold a discussion via videoconference and social media, and pose questions to guests during a 90 minute session. Learning activities and resources will be provided for teachers to deliver to students over a period of one to two weeks prior to the videoconference.
Through this initiative, the RCMP aims to empower youth to take action on important social issues. Supporting youth is one of the RCMP's strategic priorities; we work with our community partners to address and prevent key risk factors that can result in young people becoming either victims of crime or offenders.

Edmonton police warn public about e-cigarette marijuana use
The Edmonton Police Service is cautioning the public regarding a new trend involving the use of electronic cigarettes for marijuana use by youth.

The Edmonton Police Service is cautioning the public regarding a new trend involving the use of electronic cigarettes for marijuana use by youth.
The service’s School Resource Officers are encountering increases in the use of marijuana oil by some students, who are using E-cigarettes to inhale the potent marijuana-based derivative. The E-cigarettes do not produce any discernible marijuana odour. Five incidents have been reported or discovered by School Resource Officers over the last two weeks; and many more where electronic cigarettes are being found on students.
“These devices only produce vapour, as opposed to smell of marijuana smoke, some youth are now recognizing this is as surreptitious way to use marijuana,” explained Sgt. Kelly Rosnau, of the EPS School Resource Officer Unit.
“The user, however, is inserting marijuana oil in the E-Cigarette cartridge, a substance that can often have THC contents higher than 90 per cent as compared to the typical marijuana cigarette which is around 10-20 per cent THC levels.”
An electronic cigarette is a battery-powered device which simulates tobacco smoking by producing a vapor that resembles smoke. It generally uses a heating element known as an atomizer, which vaporizes a liquid solution. Some solutions contain a mixture of nicotine and flavorings, while others release a flavored vapor without nicotine.

The secondary concern is safety. The production of this oil is not very safe as large amounts of butane are used and a risk of explosions can be a real hazard.
“Supporting student health and safety is always our first priority,” said Pat Lema, Assistant Superintendent of Edmonton Catholic School District Operations. “The Edmonton Police Service has shared their concerns with us about an increased use of electronic cigarettes and we have amended our ‘Smoke Free Environment’ District policy and regulation to include a ban of e-cigarettes on all District property,” Lema went on to say.
To ensure the health and safety of students and staff, the Superintendent of Edmonton Public Schools has asked principals to prohibit the use of e-cigarettes by students or staff on school property. This is in keeping with their policy on conduct and behavior.
“Edmonton Public Schools fully supports the Edmonton Police Service in making the community aware of any dangerous emerging trend,” says Superintendent Darrel Robertson. “As a District, we will do what we can to not only enforce the restriction of the e-cigarette use around our schools, but to making sure our students, staff and parents are educated of its dangers.”

The critical support that victim service programs provide is directly tied to the overall effectiveness of the police and justice systems response to victims of crime - and the RCMP is deeply grateful for this support." - Marianne Ryan, Commanding Office of the Alberta RCMPThe agreement also reaffirms the commitment to treat all victims of crime with courtesy, compassion and respect.
