Human remains found in Banff National Park
On April 5th, 2014 at approximately 1:45 p.m. Banff RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of found bones in an area on Vermillion Lakes Road in Banff National Park. Police attended to the area and the bones were seized. The Office of the Medical Examiner examined the bones and determined they were human remains.
Due to weather and ground conditions a proper search of the area could not be conducted until today. The search done by ‘K’ Division Special Tactical Operations Unit located additional bones. These bones will be processed by RCMP Calgary Forensic Identification Section and sent to the Office of the Medical Examiner for further examination.
Banff RCMP and RCMP Calgary Major Crime Unit continue to investigate.
Banff RCMP would like to thank the number of residents and visitors for their understanding and cooperation in learning that the Vermillion Lakes Road would be closed for much of the day.

Woman flees traffic stop in St. Albert, injures another driver
On April 23rd, 2014, at approximately 9:45 p.m., St. Albert RCMP observed a white Jeep Cherokee parked in the intersection of Hebert Road and Cunningham. The Jeep Cherokee was facing eastbound and did not have any back tail lights illuminated. The RCMP officer, in a marked police vehicle, initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle in question. The Jeep Cherokee pulled over to the right lane on Hebert Road in front of the police vehicle. Before the officer got out of the police vehicle to approach the driver, the Jeep Cherokee accelerated and took off at a high rate of speed.
The Jeep Cherokee proceeded eastbound on Hebert Road and collided with a dark blue Kia Sorento in the intersection of Flagstaff Avenue. The Kia Sorento sustained substantial rear end damage and the 40 year old female driver, a resident of Edmonton, was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The twenty-eight year old female driver of the Jeep Cherokee, also a resident of Edmonton, was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She was later released on a Promise To Appear in court with the following charges pending:
- Count 1: Dangerous Operation causing bodily harm - Section 249(3) Criminal Code
- Count 2: Resist Arrest - Section 129(a) Criminal Code
- Count 3: Resist Arrest - Section 129(a) Criminal Code
- Count 4: Flight from police causing bodily harm - Section 249.1(3) Criminal Code
- Count 5: Impaired Operation of Motor Vehicle by drug - Section 253(1)(a) Criminal Code
St Albert RCMP has received a report that on Monday, April 28, 2014 a suspicious male adult was seen standing by a bench near the Shell Station located on Fairview Boulevard in St. Albert, Alberta between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. The man’s pants were open and his genitals were exposed. This man did not talk to, gesture towards or approach anyone but he was seen by at least one junior high student. The man left the area on foot shortly after being seen.
This man is described as being in his mid to late 50’s, with a darker complexion. He appeared to be unkempt in appearance and had “ratty” hair.
St. Albert RCMP continues to investigate this incident, but have not identified or located the suspect. Early morning collision in rural Grande Prairie
RCMP are investigating an early morning collision which occurred at an intersection of highway 43x and range road 63.
This morning at approximately 6:45 a.m. Grande Prairie rural RCMP and EMS were called to a collision between a Ford truck believed to be travelling westbound on 43x and a Chevy truck travelling southbound on RR63. The driver of the Ford truck, as well as the passenger of the Chevrolet truck were transported to local hospital with non life threatening injuries.
Alcohol and drugs are not believed to have been a factor in the collision. Charges are still pending.
On April 25, Red Deer RCMP responded to a report of the theft of handmade jewellery from an exhibitor stand at the Mane Event exhibition taking place at Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta. The theft occurred sometime between Friday evening and Saturday morning.
Two plastic tubs filled with hand-made jewellery were taken from a display. 30 pieces were stolen in total, each valued between $175 - $275, for a total value of $7,000. 10 of the pieces were brown in colour and 20 were turquoise in colour; all were made of rare stones and beads. Please see attached photos similar to the items that were stolen.
There were no witnesses to this theft, and no video surveillance. RCMP advise that, if anyone encounters large amounts of jewellery similar in style to the items pictured here, it may be stolen.

On April 28th, 2014, Morinville RCMP responded to a complaint of a break and enter in progress in Morinville. Jason MACALONEY and Diana BARRETT were subsequently arrested in possession of stolen property, such as various wallets, ID cards and vehicle accessories. Morinville RCMP has charged MACALONEY and BARRETT with 54 property crimes related charges. One of the accused was also arrested on 56 property crimes related outstanding warrants from the Edmonton area. Police have identified stolen property from at least 27 individuals. Both accused have been remanded in custody and will be appearing in court on May 1st, 2014 in Morinville.
On April 28, 2014, at approximately 7:00 a.m., Beaumont RCMP received a complaint to assist the fire department at a house fire in Beaumont. Upon entry to the home, a male believed to be in his early 50's, was located in the residence deceased.
Positive identification of the male is yet to be determined and notifications of next of kin are still to be completed. The cause of the fire and the death are not yet known. The RCMP's Major Crime Unit and other support services, are assisting with this investigation.
An autopsy is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Edmonton.

Arrests made in Calgary area grocery store robberies
The Calgary Police Service has charged four individuals connected with grocery store robberies that took place in the Calgary area between September and November, 2013.
Through the course of a five-month investigation known as Operation VOLCOM, it is alleged that a suspect orchestrated these take-over style robberies by enlisting the help of a number of associates. The robberies occurred at Family Foods, Real Canadian Wholesale Club S.E., Basha Foods, No Frills -The Box, Rob’s No Frills Airdrie, and Blair’s - No Frills.
In each of these robberies, two to four culprits, disguised and armed with guns, knives and other weapons would enter the premises at the time of closing, having knowledge of the employees working inside. They would take control of the employees, ordering them to the ground and searching their personal effects such as purses and wallets. They would then gain access information for the safe or force an employee to open it. After removing the contents, the culprits exited the store and escaped.
At Rob’s No Frills Airdrie, at closing time the culprits kidnapped the store manager. As a result they gained access to the store and emptied the safe. The manager was subsequently released without physical injury.
To date, investigators have laid the following charges:
In the robbery at Basha Foods, 2717, Sunridge Way N.E., on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, Robert VERLOOP, 45, is charged with Robbery.
In the robbery at Robs No Frills Airdrie, on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2013, Hasson WILSON, 46, faces charges of Robbery and Kidnapping.
Charges are still pending in the robbery at No Frills – The Box.
In relation to these robberies, two men have pleaded guilty and are currently serving their term.
In the robbery at Family Foods, 116, 817 19 St. N.E. on Sept. 29, 2013, Justin MITCHELL, 31, has pleaded guilty to Robbery and using a firearm in the commission of an offence.
Keith ALCOCK, 34, has pleaded guilty to:
- Robbery with a firearm
- Possession of firearm while prohibited
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000
In the robbery at Real Canadian Wholesale Club, 222 58 Ave. S.E. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, ALCOCK has pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and possession of stolen property over $5,000.
In the robbery at Basha Foods, 2717, Sunridge Way N.E., on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, ALCOCK has pleaded guilty to break and enter and robbery.
In the robbery at Blairs-No Frills, 10233 Elbow Dr. S.W. on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, ALCOCK has pleaded guilty to:
- Robbery with a firearm
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000
- Dangerous driving
For his involvement in these robberies ALCOCK was sentenced to 7.7 years in custody and a lifetime firearm prohibition. MITCHELL was sentenced to three years in custody and a 10-year firearm prohibition.
As Operation VOLCOM continued, it was learned that up to 10 more businesses were being targeted for similar style robberies. It is alleged WILSON gained the co-operation of others in conspiring to commit future robberies and kidnappings at the Canyon Meadows Cinema, Real Canadian Wholesale Club N.E., and Rocky Mountain Pawn Ltd. Police have laid the following charges:
Collectively, the following men face a total of 50 conspiracy related charges which include conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted robbery, attempted kidnapping, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and possession of firearms/dangerous weapons.

Graffiti and vandalism incidents to schools and a synagogue in Calgary
The Calgary Police Service is investigating several reports of graffiti on a number of south Calgary schools and a synagogue.
Some of these incidents are being investigated as hate crimes.
Officers received a report that on Monday, April 21, 2014, just after midnight, a swastika was painted on the rear door of a Jewish synagogue in the 500 block of Woodpark Blvd. S.W.
It is believed three suspects were involved in this incident, each described as around 5’ 10” tall, weighing 140 to 150 lbs.
It was also reported that the word “swastika” was painted on a nearby school.
The CPS is also investigating several other incidents of graffiti vandalism at local schools, which happened sometime between the evening of Thursday, April 24, and the early morning of Friday, April 25, 2014.
The following incidents were reported:
- Graffiti, including swastikas, and vulgar drawings and language was spray painted on a school in the 200 block of Parkland Way S.E.
- Swastikas and abusive words were painted on a school in the 1700 block of Acadia Dr. S.E.
- Words and vulgar sayings were painted on a school in the 700 block of Mapleton Dr. S.E.
- A school in the 13800 block of Parkside Dr. S.E. was painted with various inappropriate words and images. The same school was vandalized two other times in previous weeks.
- All of these incidents are being investigated by District 8 officers, as well as the CPS Hate Crimes Co-ordinator, the CPS Graffiti Co-ordinator and the Joint Graffiti Investigative Team.
The Joint Graffiti Investigative Team is a multi-agency group of officers from the Calgary Police Service, The City of Calgary Animal & Bylaw Services and Calgary Transit Public Safety & Enforcement, that focuses on investigating graffiti vandalism and graffiti offenders in Calgary.

Drugs, guns, and cash were seized after Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) shutdown a local dial-a-dope network. Four people are facing a total of 61 charges as result of the investigation.
“These important arrests highlight the success of the ALERT model and its coordinated approach to making Alberta communities safer. The City of Grande Prairie is proud to fund ALERT and we appreciate the continued support of the Government of Alberta and the participating law enforcement agencies,” said Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given, who is also an ALERT Board member.
ALERT’s Grande Prairie Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU), with the assistance of Grande Prairie RCMP detachment members, executed a search warrant at a local home on April 23rd. More than $90,000 worth of drugs was seized, including heroin, cocaine, MDMA and GHB, alongside $50,000 cash, and three firearms.
Serious collision 30 km south of Grande Prairie on Hwy 40
RCMP and emergency responders attended the scene of a four vehicle motor vehicle collision 30 km south of Grande Prairie on highway 40. Male drivers of two separate pick up trucks were sent to QEII hospital by ambulance with serious injuries and are presently being treated. One male driver of a van was pronounced deceased at the scene. An RCMP collision analyst from Peace River was also on scene as police continue to investigate the cause of the collision. Initial scene assessment indicates that it was a head on collision that initiated the multiple vehicle involvement.
Charges laid in Stony Plain area alcohol-related fatality
Just after 10:00 pm on April 29th, RCMP were advised of a traffic collision between a pick-up truck and a motorcycle on Highway 16 Eastbound, at the junction with 16-A. This is approximately six miles West of Stony Plain.
The motorcycle driver, a 53 year old male from Edmonton, was declared deceased on scene.
RCMP in Spruce Grove/Stony Plain have charged 20 year-old Kevin Andrew SHELLEY of Quesnel, B.C. with impaired driving causing death, and operation of a motor vehicle while over .08 causing death.
He has been released from custody on a Recognizance, with $10,000 no-cash bail. Conditions include: not to operate a motor vehicle, and no alcohol or non-prescription drugs.
His first appearance will be in Stony Plain Provincial Court on Wednesday, May 7th.

Cash and drugs seized after Lloydminster traffic stop
On April 29, 2014, Lloydminster Municipal RCMP completed a traffic stop in the CIBC parking lot located at 4915 -50 Street and 56 oxycontin pills, 1/2 gram of methamphetamine and $700 cash were seized.
Sarah Elizabeth JOHNSON, 20yrs, of Lloydminster, Alberta has been charged with oxycontin possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of methamphetamine, proceeds of crime, breach of probation x 2. JOHNSON will appear in Lloydminster Saskatchewan Provincial Court on Thursday, April 1, 2014.
Cold Lake, Alberta, On April 28, 2014 at 1:44 p.m. Cold Lake RCMP responded to an armed robbery with a firearm at the Shop Easy Grocery located in Cold Lake North. A lone male suspect entered the Shop Easy holding a handgun and demanded money and cigarettes. The suspect was unable to get any money, but got away with 5-6 packs of cigarettes. There were two employees in the store and one customer at the time of the robbery. There was no confrontation and no one was injured. Two suspects were seen leaving the scene on foot.
At 4:10 p.m. two males were arrested for the armed robbery and are being held at Cold Lake Detachment pending a bail hearing. The firearm used in this robbery was located by Cold Lake RCMP in an outbuilding in a forested area within the city limits of Cold Lake and was a pellet gun that resembled a real handgun.
One male has been charged with robbery and disguise with intent.
The other male has been charged with robbery, disguise with intent and pointing a firearm. This male has also been charged with a second count of disguise with intent as a result of an attempted theft at the Bee Safe storage facility on April 27, 2014.
Both accused are under 18 years old and their names cannot be released.
At approximately 07:25 am on April 29, RCMP and Emergency crews responded to a 2 vehicle collision on Township Road 120 just East of the Black and White Trail. An Eastbound car with 4 youths headed to Saskatchewan attempted to pass a group of vehicles and struck an Eastbound truck just ahead of them turning left into a private roadway.
Three occupants of the car were taken to hospital with only minor injuries, and one was later airlifted to Calgary with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the truck was uninjured.
Police continue to investigate, and ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision to please contact the Redcliff RCMP at 403-548-2288.
The RCMP are continuing their investigation into the house fire which resulted in the death of one individual. The autopsy was completed at the Edmonton Medical Examiner's office. The deceased was positively identified as Daniel Dumont, age 54 of Beaumont. The cause of death is not being released, however, police are not treating this as a homicide.
Highway 3 MVC results in injury
Shortly before 6:30 pm on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, Redcliff RCMP responded to a two vehicle MVC on Highway 3 near Range Road 75. An eastbound pick-up truck stopped to make a left turn on Range Road 75 and was hit from behind by another pick-up. This second pick-up rolled and the driver and sole occupant was seriously injured as a result of the collision. No other injuries were reported.
The investigation by the RCMP had traffic shut down on Highway 3 for a short period of time and was reopened later in the evening. The driver of the second pick-up has been charged under the provisions of the Traffic Safety Act.
Multiple mischiefs in Lloydminster
The Lloydminster RCMP is investigating multiple mischiefs that were committed on the night of April 25th 2014. Vehicles, residences and businesses located north of 46th street between 53rd avenue and 47th avenue were damaged by one or more individuals using a pellet gun.
Lethbridge Regional Police have charged a 42-year-old Coaldale man in connection with several tire thefts.
On April 29, 2014 police responded to a report that a tire had been stolen off a vehicle parked in a lot along the 200 block of 4 Avenue South. A description of the suspect was provided at the time and while police were on scene a male matching the description was located beside a jacked up vehicle with one of its tires removed. The male was subsequently arrested without incident.
Police recovered a tire and rim from a vehicle the man was driving and later obtained and executed a search warrant at his home. Additional tires were recovered from the home.
Jeffrey Nicholas Cahoon, 42, of Coaldale is charged with two counts of theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, attempted theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court May 2.
Since the end of March there have been more than a dozen tire thefts in Coaldale and Lethbridge, primarily from commercial locations where multiple vehicles are parked at any given time.
Investigation into the recent rash of tire thefts is ongoing and additional charges are anticipated.
Expansion of LRPS headquarters: what the public needs to know during construction
The Lethbridge Regional Police Service will soon be breaking ground on the construction of an expansion along the north side of the station to accommodate ongoing growth and meet the needs of the Service for the next 20 years.
Construction will take place in several phases and is expected to be completed in 2016. The Service has developed comprehensive business continuity plans to ensure operations remain as close as possible to business as usual during the construction, however there will be some impacts to the community.
1. The Collision Reporting Centre (CRC) and our Traffic Response Unit will be relocated off site for the duration of construction. Effective May 6, 2014 walk-in collision reports will no longer be accepted at the police station.
To report a collision that doesn’t involve injuries or the commission of a criminal offence, citizens are advised to attend the Collision Reporting Centre located at 406 4 Avenue North. The hours of operation of the CRC are Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Sundays.
All collisions where the combined damages exceed $2,000 are required by law to be reported to police. In cases where a collision involves injuries or the commission of a criminal offence please call 911.
**Please note: the CRC will be closed May 5 to facilitate the move**
2. Effective May 1, 2014 no new bookings for station tours will be accepted. Further, no bookings will be accepted for use of the LRPS community room. During construction station tours and public use of the community room is suspended.
3. Access to the police station will remain open to the public throughout construction. Walk-in complaints/crime reports, applications for criminal record checks, pardons, etc. will continue to be accepted at the front counter, however citizens are advised public parking during construction will be limited. Public parking areas will be clearly posted.

Charges pending after fatal collision between tractor trailer and car in Edmonton
The Edmonton Police Service is investigating a collision between a tractor trailer and car in the Kingsway area this evening, which claimed the life of one man and sent a woman to hospital with minor injuries.
EPS Downtown Division patrol officers responded to a report of a serious injury collision at Kingsway and Princess Elizabeth Avenue at approximately 5:40 p.m. on Monday, April 28, 2014. It was reported by witnesses that a Honda Accord was travelling eastbound on Kingsway, when the car allegedly attempted a left-hand turn onto Princess Elizabeth Avenue. A Mack Tridem travelling westbound on Kingsway with the right-of-way struck the car in the intersection.
The 27-year-old female driver of the car was treated and transported to hospital by EMS with minor injuries. EMS declared the 27-year-old male passenger of the car deceased on scene. The 27-year-old male driver of the tractor trailer did not report any injuries.
The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit is investigating the fatal collision, and both vehicles have been seized for mechanical inspection. It is believed that alcohol may have been factor, and charges are pending against the driver of the car.

This is Edmonton’s fifth traffic fatality for 2014.
