Lethbridge teen facing child exploitation charges in connection with online harassment

Lethbridge Regional Police have charged a 14-year-old boy in connection with a three-month investigation into online harassment and threats.

In February police responded to a complaint from two 13-year-old girls and a 14-year-old girl who reported receiving numerous harassing, sexually explicit and threatening messages via their social media accounts. The girls were demanded to provide sexually explicit photos of themselves and were told if they didn’t comply, their social media accounts would be compromised and they would be physically harmed.

A lengthy investigation by School Resource Officers, with assistance from ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit, resulted in the identification of a young male subject and the seizure and analysis of various electronic devices.

Earlier this month police attended a Lethbridge home and a 14-year-old boy was arrested without incident.

The boy, who cannot be identified, is charged with three counts each of extortion and child luring and one count of making sexually explicit images available to a child. He was released from custody with several conditions, including a prohibition from using any electronic device capable of accessing the internet or sending or receiving text messages.

He is scheduled to appear in court May 21.

RCMP CRU begins community bike patrols

Red Deerians will see yet another sign of spring as RCMP bike patrols hit the streets yesterday for the first time this season. The three-person Community Response Unit (CRU) was established several years ago to create a more visible and consistent presence downtown and in city parks.

“CRU members are more accessible to the public when we’re on foot or on bikes and that allows us to speak with citizens more easily,” says Corporal Sarah Knelsen, RCMP CRU supervisor. “Police officers on bike patrols also act as a proactive presence to deter criminal and antisocial activity.”

Constable J. Hewitt is ready to hit Red Deer's streets and trails
CRU members focus much of their time in the downtown, building relationships with businesses, agencies and downtown residents. Knelsen says that improved communication helps CRU members work with community partners to address upcoming issues more quickly and develop preventive strategies; they also provide support to the drug and traffic units regarding enforcement strategies.

“As well as being a presence in the downtown, CRU members on bikes have the flexibility to move quickly through the parks and trails,” Knelsen says. “During the peak seasons for parks use, we are there to support Parks Bylaw Officers in keeping the parks safe and clean for the enjoyment of all citizens.”

CRU performs bike patrols in the downtown and in city parks through late spring, summer and early fall. These RCMP members liaise with other RCMP units, write tickets, make arrests and lay charges as necessary.
