Canfax launches new livestock app

Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development

Cattle producers all along the supply chain now have access to a new, free market prices mobile app based on historical Canfax data. CFXPro is for those looking to have access to breakeven calculators, price projections, as well as standard market information on Canadian cattle.

“This app brings a new level to our service here for the industry,” says Brian Perillat, manager and senior analyst at Canfax. “It’s unique to the Canadian cattle industry as it’s focused on bringing a Canadian perspective to market information.”

Canfax, a division of Canadian Cattlemen's Association, has provided analysis of markets and trends in the North American beef industry for over forty years.

Perillat said that most of the current cattle market information comes out of the United States, but they’re breaking it down and applying it to all levels of the Canadian beef supply chain such as cow calf operations.

Geared for multiple industry stakeholders, especially cow calf producers, the app helps project, from current market conditions, what the prices of calves might look like in the fall. “Timeliness of information delivery is so important,” Perillat says.

Included in this guide are prices of calves, a breakeven calculator, futures market information and daily updates on the new price insurance numbers so producers can check what those numbers are at any given time. Perillat is quick to remind that the app acts as a guide, based on previous Canfax numbers to estimate futures.

Perillat also notes that the app is extremely easy to use. “Operators enter basic information into the application to receive calculations that aid in the decision making process of buying and selling cattle. By entering minimal information, producers can get an idea of what kind of price to expect when they sell their animals.”

The CFXPro app launched in March for iPhones and iPads and older versions of Blackberry. It's available through iTunes and Blackberry.
