Canyon School held a 10 day reading challenge this month, which included a daily draw for kids who read the day before each draw. The prizes: new books to read.
On Wednesday April 9 Kalvin Bruder (grade 4), Ava Billington (grade 4), Abigail Rigaux - (grade 2), and Joel Bonwick (ECS) each won the opportunity to visit the office and choose a book from the prize selection.
Each of them said reading is an important skill. "You read everything," said Rigaux. Bruder said that even to solve a math question involves reading. Billington looked forward to reading the book she chose, and Bonwick said he likes to read posters. They also said they read books, magazines, and on the internet as well.
"We have been doing this Reading Challenge for about 5 years now. It involves the entire school, kindergarten to grade 6," explained teacher Kathy Brown. The 10 day challenge included individual draw winners, and a class from each of two age categories with the highest average of minutes read by its students won a $50.00 cash prize at the assembly held on April 11. Class 2A won the Kindergarten to Grade 3 category with 355 minutes of reading and class 5B won the Grades 4 to 6 category with 576 minutes of reading.
"Of course, the goal with this is to encourage home reading and it seems to work. Nothing like a little bit of healthy competition," said Mrs. Brown.
The books were supplied by the Canyon School Booster Club.
