Missing Fort Vermilion canoeist located

On April 16, 2014 at approximately 11:45pm Fort Vermilion RCMP, along with Fort Vermilion and La Crete Fire Departments responded to a complaint of an overdue male travelling in a canoe on the partially frozen Bear Creek. The 18 year old male had departed in a canoe up the river at approximately 7:00pm and was supposed to travel approximately 5 miles down the river and get picked up by his grandfather at the Bear Creek Bridge on Highway 88 Southbound. It was estimated the trip should have taken approximately 3 hours in good conditions, but the river was partially frozen, it was dark out, and the water had a lot of debris from the winter. The 18 Year old Male was not dressed for the weather nor prepared for any emergency.

At approximately 2:00 am two small boats operated by the Fire Department Search and Rescue started from each end of the river to search for the missing male. The male was located just before 3:00am unharmed.

Fort Vermilion RCMP would like to thank the Fort Vermilion and La Crete Fire Departments for all their assistance in this matter.

RCMP would also like to remind the public to take precautions when planning any water based activities. Never go out on the water in negative degree weather or when the weather is poor. Pre-plan your route, know how long the travel should take, and what the obstacles might be. Have a back-up plan if something was to go wrong and a way to make contact, such as satellite phone, as cell phone signal is not always existent. Always dress appropriately for the weather, and wear a lifejacket.

Life jackets are proven to extend your life expectancy in cold water drastically, as you can continue to float once your muscles no longer work, which takes only minutes in such cold temperatures.

Serious multiple vehicle collision in Grande Prairie

On the morning of April 22, 2014 at approximately 8:45 a.m. Grande Prairie RCMP, along with other emergency responders attended the scene of a serious collision on the Highway 43 by-pass between 102nd Street and 100th Street. Initial reports are that a westbound vehicle collided with two other westbound vehicles before crossing the eastbound lanes and coming to rest on a grassy area that runs parallel to 117th Avenue.

Three occupants from one of the vehicles struck, which included two children and the driver from the vehicle that is believed to have collided with the other vehicles were taken to a local area hospital for treatment. It is believed that some of the injuries are serious.

A RCMP Collision Analyst was called to assist with the investigation. As a result, the Highway 43 by-pass between 100th Street and 102nd Street was closed in both directions to allow for a thorough investigation to be completed. The roadway has since been reo-opened.

RCMP have no updates on the condition of any of the injured and the collision is still under investigation.

Problem property in Calgary shuttered

A Forest Lawn residence that for years has plagued the neighbourhood with drug activity, has been vacated thanks to an Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) investigation.

On the morning of April 22, ALERT’s Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) team vacated the Calgary residence located in the 2000-block of 41 Street SE. The home is an up-and-down duplex and SCAN changed the locks and boarded up the windows and doors of the home.

The investigation into the Forest Lawn home began in September 2012 after police responded to the residence over a dozen times for various disturbances. Investigators witnessed behaviour consistent with drug trafficking and prostitution and made an application for a Community Safety Order to effectively close the home.

A Community Safer Order, which falls under the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act, is part of provincial legislation that empowers residents to take back their neighbourhoods. The order grants investigators the authority to close the home for a period of 90 days, during which time the tenant is barred from entering or occupying the property. The 90-day closure has been proven effective in breaking the cycle of problem behavior.

SCAN investigators use civil legislation to target problem properties around the province used for illegal purposes such as prostitution, drug use and trafficking, and gang activity. SCAN conducts investigations into residences and commercial properties in both urban and rural areas. Since April 2013, SCAN has received more than 430 complaints about problem properties province-wide.

Albertans who suspect illegal activity is occurring at a property in their neighbourhood can contact SCAN online at www.alert-ab.ca/scan or toll-free at 1-866-960-SCAN (7226). All complaints are confidential. Residents are reminded never to investigate suspected problem properties on their own.
