Serious Injury Collision in Fox Creek

On April 12, 2014 around 12:07am, members of the Fox Creek RCMP, EMS and Fire Department responded to a complaint of a single vehicle rollover on Kaybob Drive near 8th Street in Fox Creek, Alberta. Once on scene it was determined the single occupant was ejected during the rollover suffering serious life threatening injuries. The occupant was treated at the Fox Creek hospital and was transferred to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton for further treatment. An RCMP Collision Analyst was consulted during the investigation and Alcohol is believed to be a factor. The RCMP are not releasing the name of the driver at this time pending an on-going investigation.

Tractor-trailer overturns on Hwy 16 near Vegreville

During the early morning hours of April 10th, 2014, Vegreville Detachment responded to a collision on Highway #16 west bound, near the Vegreville overpass. A semi truck heading west bound lost control, tipping on its side and losing its load of plywood. The overturned semi completely obstructed the westbound lanes. A second semi lost control while trying to avoid the obstruction ending up in the east bound ditch after crossing the east bound lanes of highway #16.

Neither driver was injured during the incident, road conditions were good and weather was clear. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor. The cause of the collision is still under investigation with Commercial Vehicle Enforcement assisting.

Asleep at the wheel - Rollover near Olds

On April 10, 2014 at 1745 hrs Innisfail Traffic Services was dispatched to a single vehicle rollover in the median of the QEII Hwy at the Hwy 27 overpass. Fire/EMS and Olds RCMP were dispatched to assist.

It was determined that a SB 1989 Ford Thunderbird, driven by the 51 year old male owner, had entered the center median via a very small gap between the end of the cable barrier system, and the start of a solid guardrail protecting a large pole that supports an overhead sign. The Thunderbird barely missed this large, unforgiving pole as it bounced between the guardrails and eventually rolled, coming to rest upside down between the NB and SB lanes.

The male driver, a resident of Airdrie, was transported to Olds Hospital by EMS, where he was treated for a small laceration, and released. The male was wearing a seatbelt; alcohol and speed were not factors. The male was charged for driving without due care and attention under the Traffic Safety Act as he admittedly fell asleep at the wheel.

Alberta Highways personnel were called to the collision scene to make temporary repairs to the guardrail after the vehicle had been successfully removed.

Of note, Investigating members on scene observed an alarming number of drivers passing the collision scene taking photos via cell phones. Several license plates were taken down, and the registered owner's can expect distracted driving tickets in the mail.

Conference aims to increase human trafficking awareness

Law enforcement members, crown prosecutors, government officials, and service providers are meeting in Banff next week to discuss human trafficking. The conference aims to better inform and equip individuals who respond to, investigate, or prosecute human trafficking cases.

The conference, which runs April 15-17, is hosted in partnership between the RCMP, Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), and the Action Coalition on Human Trafficking (ACT Alberta). The conference features global authorities on human trafficking and will explore such issues as prosecutions, investigations, and victim assistance. The conference will also feature keynote speaker Kathryn Bolkovac, known for blowing the whistle against the United Nations involvement in sex trafficking in post-war Bosnia.

“Human trafficking exploits some of our most vulnerable people,” said Jonathan Denis, Minister of Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. “This conference gives law enforcement and legal professionals an opportunity to discuss how to work together to prevent and stop this horrible crime.”

Human trafficking has been assessed as the second most profitable criminal business globally, behind only drugs. However, human trafficking is largely underreported due to the reluctance of victims to come forward and the clandestine nature of the business. ACT Alberta reported a 500% increase in identified human trafficking victims between 2011 and 2012 and the numbers continue to grow.

“Victims of human trafficking require complex services, anything from immigration and legal support to long term counseling and employment training. But in order to first reach victims, we need law enforcement, criminal justice professionals and service providers to receive training like this. This conference will help us continue our collaborative work to identify and respond to human trafficking in Alberta” says Andrea Burkhart, Executive Director with ACT Alberta.

The human trafficking conference aims to dispel several of the many preconceptions surrounding the issue, as it affects men and women, young and old, Canadians and foreign nationals, and many, if not all ethnicities and cultural groups. Victims of trafficking are forced into the commercial sex industry, factory sweat shops, food services sector, construction industry, agricultural work, domestic servitude, and gang activities.

“Human trafficking affects every region in the world and Alberta is no exception,” said ALERT Chief Executive Officer Insp. Charmaine Bulger. “Collectively, we need to be more proactive in reporting and disrupting criminal networks that exploit men, women, and children and trap them in situations of forced labour and/or sexual exploitation.”

Human trafficking involves recruitment, transportation, or harbouring a person though abduction, force, threats, coercion, and/or fraud for the purposes of exploitation.
