At approximately 12:24 pm RCMP Lethbridge was dispatched to the scene of what was reported to be an explosion and fire at a potato storage facility northeast of Coaldale in a rural area. Fire crews from the surrounding area were fighting the fire at the time. At initial investigation it is believed the explosion was the result of a chemical treatment on some product inside of a barn that ignited. One person is reported to have burn injuries, not believed to be life threatening, and has been transported to the Lethbridge Hospital for treatment.
Occupational Health and Safety has become involved in the investigation. It is unknown at this time what was the cause of the ignition that started the fire. The investigation is continuing.
