The Town of Pincher Creek's Recreation department hosted a mass registration event for community and sports organizations last Thursday evening, March 20 in the lobby of the MCC arena.  The event was very well attended, according to many of the organizers present.

Samantha Bonwick

Samantha Bonwick ran a booth on behalf of Parent Link's Triple P Positive Parenting Program.  She was there mainly to raise awareness of the program.  "It's about working with their self esteem, and everything, and being positive.  There were a lot of people here today, a lot of people came.  There was a great big line."  In addition to being recognized for her excellence in childcare, Bonwick is also the author of 'Sandcastles', a book for children illustrated by Kimberly Murfin (click here if you missed that story).  She's been reading from her book at local schools and has an exciting opportunity coming up to read from it at a national book store chain.

Kim Jorgenson
Kim Jorgenson was on hand running a booth for Pincher Creek's Dolphins Swim Club. "It's going well today, thank you," she said.  "We have to do rookie week first, we don't really know where to put people, she explained.  That assessment event will be happening May 1 and 2 starting at 4:00 pm at the pool.  "Once the kids are all in the water and the coaches can assess them, then we know where to place them.  This is more of an information session than anything.  It's free, it doesn't cost anything, and we can talk to parents once we know how it's going to go."

John and Kathleen Hancock were promoting the "Paint Your Mural Fund".  Under the umbrella of Communities In Bloom, the project intends to replicate the mural that that once adorned the side of Higa's Pharmacy on Main Street before the building was demolished (click here for that story)   "Oh we got some interest, and we got some donations," said John.  "What we're trying to do is involve everybody in the area."

Chase Lincez
859 Crowsnest Squadron Air Cadet Chase Lincez, in uniform, was quite effectively representing the squadron.  "I have been in Air Cadets for one year.  I was originally in Army Cadets.  I switched over because I felt that Air Cadets was the way to go for me, because I want to get my licence, my pilots license," he explained.  "I train out in Crowsnest Pass, and any airport that is available.  Usually we go gliding."  Last October the squadron visited Vulcan for gliding lessons.  "I like it, it's really fun.

I asked him what the appeal was.  "Probably for me, it was the summer training camps," he replied.  "They send you off, no costs whatsoever, and you get to learn what you chose, and you're getting paid to do this."  General training, survival, drill, leadership, aviation, music, band, and pipe band are a few of the options available to the Air Cadets.  "Then that opens up a ton of other camps, like I'm going to marksmanship, so I will learn how to shoot guns, and can train others how to do it.  There's a good amount of camps you can go to.  Every time I go there, it's always a new experience, and always better."

Lincez obviously benefits from the effective speaking course offered by the Cadets.  I did an improve speech to win in my corp, then went to zones (in Calgary) and did it in front of judges and other people I didn't know."  His theme was 'Why I Remember, November 11'.  "So it was a great experience for me, and one that I will always remember, and I learned from it."

Allison Malhi and Kelly Lepine
Allison Malhi and Kelly Lepine were representing Minor Soccer and Ladies Soccer. In addition to their coaching and organizing efforts with Minor Soccer these two young ladies also roam the pitch as members of Pincher Creek's infamous Dirrty Girrls (sp).  Anticipation for the coming season is beginning to mount.  "We'll be kicking," said Malhi.  From 7:00 to 8:00 we had lineups all the way."

It is nice that all the organizations can be together," Malhi added, saying that the event gave them a chance to compare schedules and look for possible conflicts.

Some wag of a scribe expressed the thought that maybe the Dirtty Girrls should team up with Sudsy's Carwash (in attendance in the person of Dan Crawford at the Mustang's table) for a fundraiser.  Could happen.

The Mustangs Football Club had a strong presence, represented by club president Faith Zachar, coaches Wayne Alexander and Dan Crawford, and others.

Town of Pincher Creek Parks and Recreation Department Director Diane Burt-Stuckey was pleased with the way the event turned out (submitting the video below to illustrate).  "Turnout was excellent.  We didn't expect it honestly, with the weather, but it was a very good turn out.  Good energy, and people were just about lined up out into the rink.  I was surprised."

Burt-Stuckey has been very busy of late preparing for the imminent Southern Alberta Games, which will be hosted by Pincher Creek July 2-5.   "They're coming.  All I know is that July is coming very quickly."
