On March 22 the Pincher Creek Atom Chinooks headed to Black Diamond for their final tournament of the year, the 'FaceOff In The Rockies'. The Atom Chinooks had been idle for the previous three weeks with only two exhibition games and two practices in that time. The Chinooks were without Rhett Fitzpatrick, Tristen Blood and Corbin Litchfield for this tournament.
Game 1: Chinooks vs Simons Valley Crazy 8's
The Chinooks came flying out in this game and it was apparent that their lack of playing time had no adverse effect on them. The Chinooks dominated the Crazy 8's in most aspects of the game. By the start of the second period the Chinooks had returned to game form and the game ended with the Chinooks winning 8 - 3. MVP chosen by the Crazy 8's coaching staff for the Chinooks was Rylan Bruns.
Game 2: Chinooks vs Okotoks Oilers
The Chinooks second game Saturday was against the Okotoks Oilers, a different Okotoks Oilers team than the one the Chinooks played in Provincial playdowns, but a formidable opponent nonetheless. The final score of this game was 6 - 4 Chinooks, with Rylan Bruns getting an empty net goal late to secure the win for the Chinooks. MVP chosen by the Oilers was Alex Comeau.
Game 3: Chinooks vs Medicine Hat Avalanche
The Chinooks entered their Sunday morning game with the Avalanche with a berth in the gold medal game already secured. This game saw Cory Dyck in net, after Kolton Kipling had started both games Saturday. The Avalanche scored first a 17:09 of the first, and after that it was all Chinooks. Final score saw the Chinooks down the Avalanche 12 - 4. Goals scorers for the Chinooks were Caleb Evans with 2 goals, Rylan Bruns with 4 goals, Logan Deley with a goal, Riley Pots with 2 goals and an assist, Cade Ames with a goal and 2 assists, Connor Stuckey with 2 assists, Alex Comeau with 2 assists, Nico Charette with an assist, Christian Bertiaume with an assist, William Johnson Jr. with an assist and on a great tic-tac-toe passing play from Johnson and Potts, Koltyn Kipling's first goal of the season. MVP of the game was Koltyn Kipling.
Game 4, Final: Chinooks vs Midnapore Mavericks
The A final was set up with both the Chinooks and Mavericks going undefeated in their respective pools. The start of the first period saw some great back and forth action between both teams. Alex Comeau broke the scoreless tie on a great end to end rush at 13:41 of the first period. Rylan Bruns scored to make it 2 - 0 unassisted at 8:26. The Chinooks took a 3 - 0 lead again scored by Bruns assisted by Cade Ames at 2:06. The Mavericks came to life in the second, scoring at 17:09 to cut the Chinooks lead to 2. At 12:19 Bruns tallied his hat trick assisted again by Ames. Alex Comeau scored at 8:38 unassisted to make to 5 - 1 Chinooks. Ames tallied at 7:12 this time assisted by Bruns and to was 6 - 1 Chinooks. The Mavericks scored late in the second and it went into the third, Chinooks leading 6 - 2. The third period saw the Chinooks score 3 more times, with Rylan Bruns scoring all three and Cade Ames assisting on his first of the period. MVP for this game was Cory Dyck. The Mavericks scored once in the period. Final score: Chinooks 9, Mavericks 3.
This tournament proved to be a great way for the Chinooks to end their season.
