Assistance sought to locate missing Grande Prairie woman
Missing: Courtney Johnstone
Grande Prairie RCMP are asking for the public's assistance in locating Courtney JOHNSTONE, 26 years old of Grande Prairie.

JOHNSTONE was last seen by associates on Monday January 27, 2014 at 11:30 p.m. at a residence on Prairie Road in Grande Prairie.

She is described as being :
  • Height - 5'8"
  • Weight- 145 lbs.
  • Blonde hair partly shaved
  • Brown eyes
  • Aboriginal

JOHNSTONE was known to be involved in a high risk lifestyle and the RCMP Edmonton KARE unit has been informed of the investigation.

Impaired driver kills three, seriously injures 4 near Gift Lake

On February 1, 2014, at approximately 02:30 am, High Prairie RCMP officers were dispatched to a two vehicle head on collision near Gift Lake on Highway 750. Local emergency services attended and located two vehicles. One of the vehicles had 5 occupants, three of the occupants had succumbed to injuries received and all three were in the front seat with one being an infant child. The two passengers in the back seat were both injured seriously, with STARS air services transporting a second infant to Edmonton who is in critical condition. The other passenger was a youth who was transported to the Slave Lake Hospital and is in serious condition

Within the mentioned northbound vehicle, two occupants were located. A passenger was transported to High Prairie and then via Air Ambulance to Edmonton who remains in critical condition. The driver of same vehicle was transported to Slave Lake Hospital and then onto Edmonton via Air Ambulance and is being treated for his injuries.

The highway at time of accident is observed to be clear, dry and straight.

An autopsy is scheduled next week at the office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton concerning the three deceased.

Gift Lake is located approximately 70 km north of High Prairie, Alberta.

This matter remains under investigation and alcohol is a factor in the collision. High Prairie/Faust RCMP officers with assistance from High Prairie GIS investigators and Peace River Traffic analyst continue to investigate the Impaired Driving Causing Death Collision.

RCMP Red Deer City investigates Armed Robbery

On Monday, February 3rd, 2014 at approximately 12:30 a.m. a lone male entered the Mac's Convenience Store located on Gaetz Avenue and 21 Street. The male suspect covered his face with his shirt and approached the employee demanding cash. When the employee did not turn over any cash the suspect produced a black handgun. The employee then complied giving the suspect an undisclosed amount of money. The male suspect then ran from the store and was seen leaving in a white Ford truck. No one was injured during this incident.


The male is described as follows:
  • Caucasian
  • Approximately 5'7" with a slim build
  • Curly blonde hair
  • Wearing a grey/black hoody and black ball cap with white writing
  • Believed to be approximately 20 years old

Microsoft scam continues

St. Albert RCMP is cautioning the public, after receiving a report of a phone scam still circulating in the St. Albert area. The scam has also been seen across Canada for over 2 years.

Someone who claims to work for Microsoft, Windows etc. is calling individuals saying that their computer runs slow or that they have a virus. The caller offers to repair the computer over the Internet, by installing anti-virus software, or asking the customer to allow the representative remote access to their computer. The customer is asked to pay for the software or repair service using a credit card.

The St. Albert RCMP is reminding people no to give out any personal information over the phone and to report any suspicious calls to your local police. Complaints can also be registered with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center at 1-888-495-8581, or www.antifraudcentre.ca

Residential explosion in the City of Airdrie 

On January 31, 2014, Airdrie City RCMP were dispatched to 1080 King's Heights Road with reports of a residential explosion. The Airdrie Fire and EMS departments also attended. The residence was contained by RCMP and the adjacent homes were evacuated for safety purposes. Airdrie Fire ensured that any fire was extinguished.

Two males from the residence were transported by EMS to Calgary where they remain in critical but, stable condition. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

Lac La Biche RCMP and Canada Post Security partner in theft investigation

On January 29, 2014 the Lac La Biche RCMP arrested and charged Brian SOPEL, 62 years of age for Theft of Mail.

Mr. SOPEL was a self contractor to Canada Post and worked in delivering mail from the Canada Post mail plant in Edmonton to numerous rural post offices in northern Alberta.

After a joint investigation with Postal Inspectors from Canada Post, RCMP executed a search warrant on Mr. SOPEL's residence and subsequently located and seized a large quantity of stolen items including: 21 new cell phones, laptops, a tablet, Military Veteran paraphernalia, clothing, other consumer goods and storage containers owned by Canada Post.

Mr. SOPEL has been charged with theft of mail and possession of articles stolen from the mail. His first court appearance is March 3, 2014 in Lac La Biche Provincial Court.

Vandalism spree in Rocky Mountain House

On January 25, 2014, Rocky Mountain House RCMP members responded to over 20 calls for service relating to spray painting of property and entering/theft from unlocked vehicles in the community of Rocky Mountain House. Police also observed additional damage to property and vehicles while on patrols during their investigation and notified homeowner's of the damage.

After an extensive Police investigation, 6 youths from the Rocky Mountain House area have been arrested and 133 charges have been laid in total. The charges range from Mischief, Theft and Possession of Stolen Property. The youths have been scheduled to appear in Rocky Mountain House Court.

Police would like to remind everyone to lock their vehicles and not leave valuables in plain view.

Grande Prairie traffic stop results in 18 charges

In the early morning hours of January 30, 2014 the Grande Prairie RCMP arrested a 20 year old man and seized drugs along with weapons as the result of a routine traffic stop of a vehicle on 100 Street in Grande Prairie.

The traffic stop lead to an investigation which resulted in the seizure of a sawed off shotgun and a switchblade along with 169 grams of marijuana, 10.5 grams of cocaine and 5.6 grams of methamphetamine.

Brandon Charles VOISEY of Grande Prairie is charged with 17 Criminal Code Charges and one charge under the Traffic Safety Act.

2 - Possession of a Controlled Substance - Section 4(1) CDSA

1 - Possess a Prohibited Firearm in a Vehicle - Section 94 CCC
1 - Possess a Loaded Prohibited Firearm without a License - Section 95(a) CCC
1 - Knowingly Possess a Prohibited Firearm without a License - Section 92(1)
1 - Possess a Prohibited Firearm without a License - Section 91(1) CCC
1 - Knowingly Possess a Prohibited Weapon without a License - Section 92(2) CCC

Drugs, guns, and pills seized from Lac Ste Anne area grow-op

Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP Drug section and Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s (ALERT) Green Team North worked together to gather information relating to a grow operation in the Rich Valley area North-west of Onoway. With assistance from the RCMP Emergency Response Team, a search warrant was executed at the residence on January 28th.
Members discovered a grow operation with 228 plants. The grow-operation was contained to a Quonset hut on the property and based on the condition of the electrical wiring and presence of mould, police believe it had been operating for some time. The equipment utilized was very sophisticated, including a costly watering and ventilation system.

Two people were arrested and in addition to marihuana plants, police seized more than one kilogram of dried marihuana, 200-plus pills (including Oxycontin), and four firearms. The total value of the drugs and plants seized is estimated at $280,000.


55 year-old Randy Blake Wiebe and 61 year-old Carol Eve Letendre, both of Lac Ste. Anne County, are both charged with:
Production of a controlled substance (marihuana)
Possession for the purpose of trafficking (x 2) (oxycodone and marihuana)
Possession of a controlled substance
Unsafe storage of a firearm (x 4)

Randy Wiebe is also charged with possession of property obtained by crime (approximately $2000.00 cash).

Carol Letendre is also charged with operation of a motor vehicle while disqualified.

Both were released from custody and will be appearing in Stony Plain Provincial Court on March 5th, 2014.

No animal cruelty found in case of dead Taber dog

On January 24th, 2014, the Taber/Vauxhall RCMP received a complaint of possible animal cruelty at a rural property near the Town of Taber. Initial allegations were that a dog may have been beaten, tied to a fence post and shot.

A necropsy was conducted on the deceased dog and concluded that the animal died as a result of being shot with a firearm. The necropsy indicated that there were no other injuries sustained by the dog prior to its death.

After a complete and thorough investigation, the Taber/Vauxhall RCMP has determined that the dog was not beaten or abused, and is believed to have been put down in a humane manner. The police investigation revealed no evidence to support charges against the owner of the animal.

Single vehicle roll-over in St. Albert

At approximately 11:30 PM on Thursday January 30th, 2014, St. Albert RCMP was dispatched to a single vehicle roll-over on McKenney Avenue near Langley street. Upon arrival police officers located a small two-door vehicle on its roof in the eastbound lane and one male was found lying on the ground approximately 5 meters from the vehicle. It appeared that the vehicle was traveling Westbound on Mckenney Avenue, lost control, crossed the median and rolled on its roof after striking a boulevard tree. The vehicle came to rest in the eastbound lane.

The male was transported to an Edmonton hospital via ground ambulance with undisclosed injuries.

St. Albert RCMP were assisted at the scene of the collision by St. Albert EMS, St. Albert fire department and RCMP police dog services.

It is not yet known whether speed or alcohol was a factor and the investigation is ongoing.
