The following is an overview of the nature of the complaints that the Pincher Creek Detachment received for the noted period. Note that the summary indicates what was reported to the police and may not have been substantiated.

A long line of traffic was stopped in the southbound lanes waiting for a train to clear the tracks farther south on 17th Street. A white 2007 Volkswagen Jetta was stopped in the far right lane of the south bound traffic and proceeded to make a u-turn across 2 lanes of traffic and was struck by a northbound black 2011 GMC Sierra.
The Jetta was struck directly in the front passenger door ( T-boned) causing extensive damage to both vehicles.
The 20 year old female passenger of the VW Jetta was fatally injured and pronounced deceased at the scene.
The 25 year old male driver of the VW Jetta and the 21 year old male driver of the GMC Sierra both sustained minor injuries and were both transported via ambulance to an Edmonton hospital.
It does not appear drugs, alcohol, speed or road conditions were factors in the collision.
The name of the deceased is not being released at this time. All individuals involved are residents of Edmonton.
Strathcona County RCMP Traffic Services and a RCMP Collision Analyst were on scene for several hours investigating the collision.
Traffic was affected in the area for approximately 3 hours due to the investigation.
Fatal Hit and Run at Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation
RCMP Request the public assistance in locating driver / vehicle that failed to remain at scene of accident.
The Valleyview RCMP are asking for the public assistance locating the driver and vehicle that struck a pedestrian walking on 69 Road approximately half a kilometer south of Highway 43 and the Calais Store on the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Reserve. On February 20 2014 at 04:50 A.M. Valleyview RCMP received a complaint of a male lying in the middle of 69 Road. RCMP attended to find Percy Papastesis aged 32 of the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Reserve deceased. Preliminary investigation leads investigators to believe Papastesis was struck by a vehicle.

ALERT surpasses $500 million worth of drugs seized
Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) have seized more than $500 million worth of drugs from Alberta streets since being formed by the province in 2006 to tackle serious and organized crime.
“The more than half a billion dollars of seized drugs showcases ALERT’s effectiveness in removing drugs from the streets and disrupting organized crime,” said Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. “On behalf of all Albertans, I thank ALERT for all they do to help keep our communities safe.”
ALERT reached the half-billion dollar milestone in late 2013, and the dollar figure is based on estimated potential street values of the drugs. If laid end-to-end in $100 bills, the total of $511,970,145 worth of drugs seized between 2007 and the end of December 2013 would reach from Fort McMurray to Lethbridge.
The most valuable drug seized in terms of total value has been marihuana, followed by cocaine and methamphetamine.
“The drug trade is directly tied to much of Alberta’s serious and violent crimes and by targeting organized crime groups ALERT has lowered the rates of victimization related to drugs, weapons and fraud offences,” said ALERT CEO Charmaine Bulger.
To date, ALERT has also seized more than 400 firearms and arrested nearly 7,000 offenders. ALERT was established and is funded by the Alberta government to bring together the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources. It includes nearly 400 municipal police, RCMP and sheriffs.

Thrice the legal limit in Wetaskiwin
On February 23 at approximately 8:00 am members of the Wetaskiwin Integrated Traffic Services were actively on patrol when a motorist was seen to proceed through a stop sign within the city of Wetaskiwin, who was also not wearing a seatbelt. A traffic stop was initiated by the Alberta Sheriff member and as a result an RCMP member of the Integrated Traffic Services was called to attend for further investigation. Signs of impairment were present on the driver.
As a result of investigation a 38 year old Wetaskiwin resident was arrested for impaired driving, subsequently providing breath samples of 260 mg%, over three times the legal limit.
Charges are pending and the man will be released for court at a future date. RCMP Wetaskiwin Integrated Traffic services reminds drivers that impaired driving is a crime and it will be treated as such. Alberta is getting tough on impaired drivers. If you drink and drive, you will be caught.
RCMP investigates sudden death near Gregoire Lake
At approximately 12:30 pm on February 21, Wood Buffalo RCMP officers were called to assist EMS as a male was located near Gregoire Lake, outside and in the snow with severe injuries. Upon police arrival the male had already been air lifted to the Northern Lights Regional Hospital where he later died.
The cause of death is unknown at this time. The investigation continues and the scene has been secured by police pending an autopsy, scheduled for Monday, February 24.
Red Deer City man arrested for theft of SCUBA gear
At approximately 11:00 am on February 12, 2014, Red Deer City RCMP received a complaint that a victim’s vehicle had been broken into overnight while parked in front of the victim’s home in the Parkvale neighbourhood of Red Deer, Alberta. A variety of SCUBA gear was stolen from the vehicle.
Earlier today, the victim contacted RCMP and informed them he had located what he believed to be his equipment, for sale on Kijiji. With the information provided by the victim, Red Deer RCMP launched an immediate investigation. As a result of the investigation, a 21 year old Red Deer man was arrested this afternoon in possession of the SCUBA gear and is facing charges of possession of stolen property. More details will be released once charges are sworn.
On February 20, 2014, the Calgary Medical Examiner's Office completed an autopsy on the 64-year-old male found deceased in a residence of Redcliff on February, 18, 2014. RCMP investigators have concluded their criminal investigation as foul play is not suspected, however will continue to assist the Medical Examiner's Office. The name of the deceased is not being released at the request of the family.
Highway 93 collision results in multiple injuries
On February 20, 2014 at approximately 11:50 am, RCMP Lake Louise officers received a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a Brewster Coach bus and a small four-door sedan vehicle on Highway 93 by Hector Lake. The four female occupants of the sedan were taken by ground ambulance to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the sedan had to be extricated using the Jaws of Life. The Brewster Coach driver had no injuries and had no passengers at the time of the collision.
RCMP officers from the Lake Louise and Banff detachments, Lake Louise Fire and EMS, Parks Canada Visitor Safety were on scene as well as ambulances from other areas. Initial investigation indicates that the Brewster Coach was travelling north towards Jasper, while the sedan was travelling South towards Lake Louise. Road conditions are believed to be a factor.
Highway 93 North and South were closed for approximately two hours, while emergency services dealt with the extraction. The highway in both directions is now re-opened.
Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors at this time.
Hector Lake is situated approximately 21 kilometres north of Lake Louise, Alberta.
This matter remains under investigation.
Vehicle mischief and theft in Fort Macleod
On February 15th 2014, the Fort Macleod RCMP received complaints that a vehicle was broken into on 21st. The vehicle was parked on the street and had its passenger side window broken out.
The RCMP is investigating this incident as a mischief and is seeking public assistance in identifying any suspects. Anyone that may have witnessed this incident or who has any information to provide are asked to contact the Fort Macleod RCMP at 403 553-7200 or call Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222-8477 (TIPS).
The RCMP would like to advise people to lock their vehicles at all times and to park in a well-lit area.

19 year old driver dies after rolling stolen car near Ponoka
On February 23rd at 9:35 am, the Ponoka RCMP received a complaint of a stolen 2003 Chrysler Sebring from a residence in Ponoka. The vehicle has been left running to warm up and was unattended at the time of the theft.
At 945 am, the Ponoka RCMP received a 911 call of a single motor vehicle accident on Range Road 254 in the County of Ponoka near Meniak Road (approximately 12 km north of Ponoka). Both the driver and a passenger were reported to be trapped in the vehicle. The vehicle had left the snow covered gravel road and had rolled several times. Ponoka RCMP responded along with Ponoka Fire Department and EMS to the scene. The 19 year old male driver was declared deceased at the scene. The 18 year old male passenger was transported to Ponoka Hospital for treatment of his non life threatening injuries. The vehicle involved in the accident was the same vehicle earlier reported stolen from Ponoka. There were only two occupants in the vehicle at the time of collision. Alcohol and speed are considered factors in the collision.
The name of the deceased is not being released at this time. Both driver and passenger were from Maskwacis. Charges of possession of stolen property over $5000 relating to the stolen vehicle are pending against the passenger.

On February 20 at approximately 6:50 am Strathcona County RCMP and Strathcona County Emergency Services responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on 17th Street south of Petroleum Way in Sherwood Park.

Fatal collision on Highway 24
At approximately 12:10 pm on February 20, Strathmore RCMP responded to calls of a motor vehicle collision on Highway 24 between Highway 1 and Glenmore Trail. Initial indications are that a south bound passenger car crossed the centre line collliding head on with a north bound tractor-trailer unit, causing both vehicles to catch fire, and an extensive debris field.
The driver of the tractor trailer was unharmed, however there is at least one fatality from the passenger vehicle. Fire Departments from Strathmore and Wheatland County attended to extinguish the vehicle fire, and the RCMP investigation is ongoing.

Drugs seized in Canmore
On February 19th, 2014, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Canmore RCMP executed a search warrant that had been granted by a justice on a residence in Canmore. The search uncovered approximately 4,500 tablets and capsules of prescription narcotics. Police believe that the controlled prescription substances were being sold illegally.
Four Canmore residents were arrested and face charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
Between Saturday, February 15th, 2014, and Tuesday, February 18th, 2014, unknown suspects attended a rural property near St. Michael, Alberta, and stole approximately 90 gallons of fuel. Suspects cut a lock off a fuel tank on a piece of heavy machinery and syphoned the gas out. Total value of the fuel and the damage to the equipment is approximately $500.
Two Hills RCMP are seeking the public's help with any information related to this theft. The public are encouraged to call immediately regarding any suspicious activity, especially in the overnight or early morning hours. Marihuana trafficking arrests in Beaumont
On Sunday, February 16, 2014, members of RCMP Beaumont Detachment initiated a traffic stop in the town of Beaumont which resulted in two suspects being arrested for possession of marihuana. Through further investigation, police determined that the suspects were in possession of marihuana with the intent of trafficking. Police seized a large quantity of marihuana and other materials believed to be used for the purpose of marihuana trafficking.
23 year-old Katrina Louise Ginter has been charged with possessing marihuana for the purpose of trafficking. She will be appearing in Leduc Provincial Court on April 10, 2014.
24 year-old Yobaat Thomas Nunifu has been charged with possessing marihuana for the purpose of trafficking, obstruction of a police officer, and failing to comply with a recognizance. He will be appearing in Leduc Provincial Court on February 20, 2014.
The investigation into this incident continues and additional charges are pending.
Two Lethbridge men charged with numerous weapons offences
Lethbridge Regional Police have charged two men with numerous weapons offences after a search warrant was executed Wednesday at a northside home and officers recovered ammunition and firearms that had previously been reported stolen.
On Feb. 18, 2014 police responded to a report that firearms had been stolen from a city residence. Following further investigation a suspect was identified and on Feb. 19 police obtained and executed a search warrant at a home along the 1300 block of 5 Avenue North.
Two males and a female were taken into custody without incident. During a search incidental to arrest police recovered a small quantity of crack cocaine and marihuana from the female.
Chance Bodan Nordean, 28, of Lethbridge is charged with five counts each of possession of a firearm contrary to an order, careless storage of a firearm and four counts each of possession of a firearm obtained by the commission of an offence and unauthorized possession of a firearm. He is remanded in custody to appear in court today.
Brett Carmen Iwaasa, 21, of Lethbridge, is charged with four counts each of possession of a weapon obtained by the commission of an offence, unauthorized possession of a firearm, five counts of offer to transfer a firearm/ammunition or device and one count of theft of a motor vehicle. He is remanded in custody to appear in court today.
Diane Carol Nordean, 51, of Lethbridge is charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance. She is remanded to appear in court today.
Investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Shots fired in Lancaster
At approximately 1:45 pm on February 22, 2014, Red Deer City RCMP received a complaint of shots fired in the Lancaster neighbourhood of Red Deer, Alberta.
A bullet entered the picture window of a residence on Lanterman Close. The residents were in the residence at time but were not injured. Other residents in the neighbourhood also reported hearing shots. RCMP members made a patrol in the area, locating a garage nearby with what appears to a bullet hole in the siding. No one was injured during this incident.
RCMP members made immediate patrols in the Lancaster neighbourhood and surrounding neighbourhoods and area. RCMP members are conducting an investigation into these matters and will provide updates as they are available.

A bullet entered the picture window of a residence on Lanterman Close. The residents were in the residence at time but were not injured. Other residents in the neighbourhood also reported hearing shots. RCMP members made a patrol in the area, locating a garage nearby with what appears to a bullet hole in the siding. No one was injured during this incident.
RCMP members made immediate patrols in the Lancaster neighbourhood and surrounding neighbourhoods and area. RCMP members are conducting an investigation into these matters and will provide updates as they are available.

Three men arrested for Red Deer armed robbery
Red Deer City RCMP, with the assistance of Ponoka RCMP, have arrested three males for the February 3, 2014 armed robbery of the Mac’s Convenience Store located on Gaetz Avenue and 21 Street.
19 year old Jordan Curtis Baron of Ponoka has been charged with:
- Criminal Code 344(1)(a.1) – Robbery
- Criminal Code 85(2)(a) – Use of an Imitation Firearm during Robbery
- Criminal Code 351(2) – Disguise with intent
- Criminal Code 344(1)(a.1 – Robbery
