Pincher Creek's Midget Huskies hosted and defeated Cardston at the MCC arena on Friday evening, February 21. By Spud League rules, in playoffs if one team wins by more than 10 points there is no second game. In a repeat of the scenario we've seen all season when these two teams have met, the Huskies were ahead 12-1 at the end of the first period, and proceeded to play pass-the-puck for the remaining two periods, with run-time started sometime in the second. The Huskies went on to win it 15-2, thereby winning round one of the playoffs. Not a fun game to watch. It probably wasn't much fun to play either.
By several accounts, the Huskies had much more fun and greater challenges when they played at the 2014 Casey Cup tournament in Great Falls Montana the weekend before. "What happened in Montana?" I asked Huskies Head Coach Kent Goodreau after the game against Cardston.
"We played our first game against Strathmore, and we beat them I think it was 6 - 2. The boys were a little tired after the long drive, but they pulled it off," he answered. The second game we played Magrath and I think that we were in their end for 19 minutes of the first. I think they only got one or two shots in the first. Then the boys got tired."
"We only went down with nine skaters. We should be used to it, I know. We ended up beating them 5 - 2, I think. We then went to the finals and played Great Falls, which is a AA team. They were big. Eight third years, and three second years on their team. We lost 4 - 1, but we came out of there with our heads high. We didn't lose because we didn't try. We went down fighting. They were a better team that day and they beat us."
Coming up in round two of playoffs according to Goodreau: "We will play the winner out of Foremost and Coaldale. There is no easy teams in playoffs, we've gotta play hockey. We have to come out running and gunning and playing our game."
