One man has died as a result of an avalanche accident that occurred at approximately 3:30 PM on Saturday, February 15, 2014 near Rowe Peak in Waterton Lakes National Park.

The other member of this backcountry party was not buried by the avalanche, and was able to locate and partially extricate his partner. Attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

Current wind and snow conditions are hampering Parks Canada’s efforts to recover the deceased’s body. All necessary resources for the recovery are in place, and ready to be utilized once weather conditions permit.

The Akamina Parkway is open to the public but may be closed on short notice to facilitate recovery efforts. Visitors are asked to check the status of the road on Alberta 511.

Updated information will be issued as it becomes available.

Update: CTV Lethbridge has identified the deceased as Lethbridge Councillor Wade Galloway, reportedly snowboarding with friends when then incident occurred.
