Livingstone School's Senior Boys Sabres Basketball team hosted their St. Michael's Dragons counterparts for a spirited game on the evening of January 8.  The Dragons did their utmost throughout but the Sabres clearly dominated the game, winning it 89-41.

The Sabres were particularly strong in the first quarter, which ended with them ahead 29-7. The second quarter was much more even, with the Sabres still outscoring the Dragons but by a much smaller margin, 18-11 to be ahead 49-19 at the half.  Any chance of a Dragons comeback was dashed in the third quarter, with the Sabres outscoring them 26-9.  The final quarter was much like the second, with the Dragons tightening up their defence and making more of the long shots.  The Sabres still took the quarter by 13-7 to win the game 89-41.

Top scorer for the Sabres was #15 Morgan Cook, who was a whirling dervish on the court. He's certainly taken his 2013 "Most Improved" award to heart. Right behind was #10 Chad Cadonic with 15 points and #7 Daylan Larson with 14 points.  #23 Eric Cadonic scored 12 points.  #12 Jonathan Erickson scored 8 points and #5 Ross Cook scored 5 points.  In fact, every member of the 10-man Sabres squad put points on the board during this game.

Top scorer for the Dragons was #10 James Lowry with 12 points, followed by #7 Justice One Owl with 10 points and #14 Eddie Many Guns with 7 points.  One Owl has a terrific long shot when he's on, something to see.

Sabres Coach Duane DeCock was visibly pleased with his team's effort on the court. "We're a young team, and we've got a lot of talent," he said.  "We need some work, but we're coming along pretty good."

"This is our first home game, we've been in two tournaments.  We were in it,  we didn't win the tournaments, but we were close."

"I think as a team, we're doing well.  We don't have one player that is standing out all the time.  We've got talent in grade twelve, and we've got talent in grade ten.  It's spread out."

Poor weather caused the cancellation/postponement of some games last December, including  "One of the tournament games, and two league games already."

The Sabres are currently ranked 9th in the province.  Coming up is the Foremost tournament on January 17/18. "That's a big one, we want to get ready for that one."

I asked him if the team was eyeing Provincials this season.  "Yes, we're eyeing it.  It's too early to say anything but..."
