RCMP requests public's assistance to locate missing Lac La Biche man

On January 24, 2014 Lac La Biche RCMP received a complaint to assist in locating Brian McCORMACK who is 41 years of age.

Missing: Brian McCormack
Mr. McCORMACK was working in the Lac La Biche area and was last seen at the Lac La Biche Inn on January 23, 2014.  Police and Mr. McCORMACKS family are concerned for his safety as this is not in his character to not have contact with his family and to not attend work.  Mr. McCORMACK does not have a vehicle and was relying on co-workers and his employer for transportation in the area.

Mr. McCORMACK is described as 5'10", approx. 180lbs, brown eyes and has a shaved head.  He was last seen wearing black leather bomber style jacket, blue jeans, dark blue or black baseball hat and orange/tan colored running shoes.

Police are asking for the public's assistance and that if you know the whereabouts of Brian McCORMACK to contact your local RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Hit and Run on the QEII - eyewitnesses sought

The QEII Integrated Traffic Unit (comprised of RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs) is seeking assistance from the public with regards to a hit and run collision that occurred on the QEII Highway on Friday January 24, 2014.


At approximately 3:30 p.m., police and emergency crews were called out to the highway for a collision involving a transport truck and a small sedan. Police were notified that the collision occurred in the north bound lanes south of the Highway 11a overpass (near Red Deer, Alberta).

Police said that a white semi tractor pulling an empty black flat deck collided with the car, dragging it for several hundred meters. The lone occupant of the car was uninjured.

Witnesses reported that the transport truck stopped momentarily at the scene but then fled prior to emergency crews arriving. The flat deck semi trailer would have likely sustained significant damage.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to please come forward and contact either the QEII Integrated Traffic Unit at (403) 343-4135 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-TIPS (8477).

Okotoks break and enter suspects flee RCMP in stolen vehicle

On January 24, 2014 at approximately 9:37 a.m., Okotoks RCMP were dispatched to a call of a break and enter in progress at a rural property located south west of Okotoks. The homeowner was in the residence at the time and scared off the suspects.

The homeowner witnessed the suspects depart her residence in a light brown 2010 Audi A5 convertible bearing Alberta licence plate 'AUDIAUS'. A short time after the break and enter, the suspects were located at a gas station in Black Diamond. Police attempted to stop the vehicle and a high speed pursuit ensued.

Unfortunately the suspects evaded police.

Cochrane RCMP attended the Audi convertible registered owner's home in Springbank where they confirmed the home and been broken into. The Audi A5 and a 2010 Lexus RX350 were stolen from the garage of the residence. The Springbank home was ransacked and numerous high value items were stolen including jewelry and an extensive wine collection.

Further investigation resulted in police obtaining video surveillance of the suspects. The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1: A white male
  • approximately 30 years of age
  • approximately 6'
  • approximately 220 lbs.
  • brown hair
  • tattooed sleeves on left and right arms


Suspect 2: A white male
  • approximately 30 years of age
  • approximately 5' 9"
  • approximately 180 lbs.black hair

Suspect 3: A white female
  • approximately 30 years of age
  • dark hair

It is suspected that these individuals have been involved in similar break and enters in Calgary and surrounding areas. The present matters are presently under investigation as police attempt to identify the suspects involved.

Olds TD Bank robbery suspect arrested

 

On Friday, January 24, 2014 at about 5:19 P.M. Olds RCMP were dispatched to the local branch of TD Bank for a reported armed robbery. Members from Didsbury Detachment and an RCMP Police Service dog team from Red Deer assisted in the response to the bank.

The suspect is reported to have entered the bank wearing a mask, brandished a hand gun then demanded money. No occupants of the bank were harmed during the interaction. The suspect left the bank and fled west of the area on foot with an undetermined amount of currency. After leaving the bank he removed his disguise. The suspect was pursued briefly by bystanders however upon learning of the existence of a firearm stopped their pursuit. Their information and description of the suspect was a significant contribution to identifying a suspect. Suspect description is a white male, 30 to 35 years of age approximately 6 feet tall, 200+ lbs, shoulder length light colored hair, with a beard. He was wearing a black hooded sweater and dark pants carrying a bag. The suspect then removed the sweater several blocks away.

The subsequent investigation has led to the apprehension of a suspect in the case. The name of the suspect is not being released at this time. The investigation is ongoing utilizing local and surrounding detachments' resources.

Police are reminding the public that during incidents of this nature to not put themselves needlessly in harms way and to keep their safety as the paramount concern. In this instance the description and information provided by witnesses is an excellent representation of how valuable a communities involvement can be in assisting in the apprehension of criminals.

Serious Strathcona County motor vehicle collision sends two to hospital


On January 23 at approximately 8:10 a.m. Strathcona County RCMP and Strathcona County Emergency Services responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving 2 vehicles in the southbound lanes on Highway 21 between Township Rd 540 and Township Rd. 542.

A Local tow company was at the location in the process of removing a vehicle from the center median. One tow truck was stopped next to the vehicle in the median while a second flag vehicle, being driven by a 56 year old male from Edmonton, was approximately 100 meters back in the inside lane with it's emergency lights activated and directional arrow diverting traffic around the stopped vehicles.

A semi truck being driven by a 42 year old male from Edmonton was traveling southbound in the inside lane and struck the flag vehicle from behind. The impact caused both vehicles to spin around two lanes of traffic and come to rest in the center median.

There was extensive damage to both vehicles and both drivers were taken by ambulance to a hospital in Edmonton with serious injuries.

It is unknown at this time if drugs, alcohol, speed or road conditions were factors in the collision.

Strathcona County RCMP Traffic Services and a RCMP Collision Analyst continue to investigate the collision and are expected to be on scene for several more hours. As a result, the southbound lanes of Highway 21 between Township Rd 540 and Township Rd. 542 will remain closed and traffic is being diverted around the scene.

RCMP Red Deer City assault investigation leads to multiple charges

At approximately 10:00 am on January 22, 2014, Red Deer City RCMP responded to a complaint of a man assaulting a woman at the Mac store, located 50 Avenue in Red Deer, Alberta.

A witness intervened when he saw a man pushing a woman in the Mac store; when he asked the man to stop assaulting the woman and to leave the area, the man assaulted the witness then produced a knife and threatened him. The witness called RCMP, who responded to the scene. The male and female left the area together on foot before police arrived, with a second male and second female. All four were located soon after.

Shortly before this complaint was called in, RCMP discovered an abandoned Toyota Avalon nearby that had been reported stolen on January 11, 2014. Keys to the stolen vehicle were found on one of the females and registration and insurance information for the vehicle was in the possession of the male suspect accused of assault.

Justin McCallum, 22 years old, of Red Deer has been charged with
  • Section 145 (3) Criminal Code – Breach of Recognizance
  • Section 355 (1)(a) Criminal Code – Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Section 267 (a) Criminal Code – Assault with a weapon
  • Section 264.1 (1)(a) Criminal Code – Uttering threats

Katie Murphy, 19 years old, of Red Deer has been charged with
  • Section 145 (1)(a) Criminal Code – Escaping lawful custody
  • Section 145 (3) Criminal Code – Breach of Recognizance X 2
  • Section 355 (1)(a) Criminal Code – Possession of stolen property over $5,000

McCallum will make his first court appearance on Monday, January 27 at 9:30 am at Alberta Provincial Court in Red Deer.

Murphy will make her first court appearance on Friday, January 24 at 9:30 am at Alberta Provincial Court in Red Deer.

RCMP continue to investigate a case of Animal Cruelty south of Taber

On January 24th, 2014 the Taber/Vauxhall RCMP received a complaint of a deceased dog that was found tied to a fence post south of Taber. Through the investigation, the Taber/Vauxhall RCMP can confirm that the dog was beaten with a blunt object as well as shot. The Taber/Vauxhall RCMP have identified persons of interest and, as this matter is still under investigation, no additional details will be released at this time.

Young man waves knife at pedestrians in Brooks

Brooks RCMP are requesting assistance from the community in identifying and locating a suspicious person.

Sometime between 2:00 PM and 2:10 PM on January 25, 2014 a younger black male approached pedestrians walking on 4 Avenue West near 10 Street West and brandished a small pocket knife waiving it towards their direction before walking away. No threats were made and no one was harmed in this incident. The male was described as wearing black pants, a blue shirt and approximately 5’10” tall. Police saturated the area making extensive patrols and inquiries however the suspect was not located.

Two Fort McMurray men charged with forcible confinement

On January 18th the Wood Buffalo RCMP entered into an investigation of forcible confinement. The investigation revealed that a Fort McMurray resident had arranged to meet an individual who they met on the internet on January 16. When the victim attended the agreed upon location they were greeted by additional and unexpected people. The victim was then held in a Beacon Hill residence against their will while their vehicle was used without permission over a period of 2 days. While held in the residence the victim was assaulted and threatened, however did not sustain serious injuries.

Jared White (26) and Darryl Kavanagh(41) both from Fort McMurray have been charged with numerous offences including forcible confinement, assault and robbery. Both are to appear in court on January 27, 2014. If convicted of these charges White and Kavanagh can face imprisonment for a period of up to 14 years.

Wood Buffalo RCMP would like to remind everyone to use caution when meeting people on the internet. Do not provide personal information, do not rush to meet someone in person and when meeting that person for the first few times always meet in a public place.

Semi/train collision in Lethbridge

Police and EMS attended a collision between a CP Rail train and a semi-truck and trailer. The collision occurred at the Highway 3 and 28 Street railway crossing in Lethbridge.  Both the driver of the truck and the train were assessed by paramedics. No serious injuries were noted.
The damage to the train is expected to exceed $750,000.  The truck and tractor were not believed to be repairable.  No hazardous materials were being carried by either vehicle.

The driver of the truck was charged with careless operation of a motor vehicle after an investigation revealed that the truck driver made an unsafe turn across the path of the oncoming train.

The safety measures at the train crossing appear to have been operational at the time of the collision.

Charges laid in Cypress County rural residential break and enters

On January 24, 2014 the Redcliff RCMP with assistance from the Medicine Hat Police Service, concluded an investigation into multiple residential break and enters that have occurred in the rural area south of Medicine Hat since December.

With the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team a search warrant was executed on a residence in the hamlet of Winnifred, Alberta. Evidence of the offences was seized and one male was arrested at the scene. A second search warrant was executed in the city of Medicine Hat with the assistance of the Medicine Hat Police Service Tactical Unit. Two firearms and other evidence of the offences was seized from the property and one male was arrested. Further investigation led to the execution of a second search warrant on the property in Winnifred later in the day. Seven additional firearms were recovered during this search warrant. The recovered firearms were confirmed as being stolen from one of the residential break and enters.

22 year old Stanley Alexander DORAN of Medicine Hat is facing 38 Criminal Code charges including 1 count of break and enter to steal firearms, 2 counts of break and enter to a residence, 9 counts of possession of a firearm while prohibited, 9 counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, 6 counts of possession of a weapon obtained by the commission of an offence, 1 count of possession of a prohibited firearm, 9 counts of careless storage of a firearm and 1 count of mischief.

49 year old Trent Wesley DORAN of Winnifred, Alberta is facing 29 Criminal Code charges including 1 count of break and enter to steal firearms, 2 counts of break and enter to a residence, 7 counts of possession of a firearm while prohibited, 7 counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, 5 counts of possession of a weapon obtained by a commission of an offence, and 7 counts of careless storage of a firearm.

Both men are remanded in custody and will appear in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on January 28, 2014.

RCMP officer and Military police seize drugs and gun

On January 24th, 2014, Morinville RCMP in partnership with CFB Edmonton Military Police stopped a suspicious vehicle on Hwy # 28 in the Sturgeon County. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a sawed off shotgun, approximately $ 3600.00 in cash, 98 tablets believed to be ecstasy, 86 grams of crack cocaine, 46 grams of soft cocaine, 59 grams believed to be crystal meth and drugs paraphernalia.


As a result two individual have been charged with several drugs and weapons offences.

Man charged with thefts from Okotoks vehicles

During the early morning hours of January 23, 2014 Okotoks RCMP received a call of a man entering vehicles in the Downey area. Officers attended the area and were able to track and arrest the male. He was in possession of property stolen from several vehicles.

Okotoks has experienced a larger than usual number of theft from vehicles recently. Since mid December 2013 there have been 48 reported thefts from vehicles.

Investigation has revealed that the thieves have even entered unlocked garages to locate vehicles and rummage through them. This is a great concern as it could indicate those responsible are getting braver and could take advantage of an unsecured residence putting the occupants in danger.

31 yr old Kenneth Dean JACOBS of Okotoks has been charged with 22 counts of Mischief, 2 counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, and 1 count of Obstruction. JACOBS was also arrested for several outstanding warrants from Calgary.

RCMP are requesting residents in the Downey area to report any incidents where their vehicles were broken into and property was stolen. Property has been recovered and police would like to return it to the rightful owners.

RCMP are reminding residents to be diligent regarding the safety and security of their vehicles and property.
  • ensure all doors to vehicles, garages and homes are locked.
  • do not leave an extra set of keys in your vehicle.
  • do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
  • if you see any suspicious activity call 911 and attempt to obtain a description of the suspect and/or vehicle if possible.

St. Albert tire and rim thefts total an estimated $18,000

On January 20th, 2014, between 1:00 - 3:00 a.m., unknown individual(s) attended St. Albert Dodge and proceeded to steal tires and rims off of three Dodge 3500 diesel trucks.  Total value of items stolen is estimated at $18,000.

Break and enter at Jarvis Lake

On December 3, 2013 Hinton RCMP responded to a break and enter at the Alberta Parks site at Jarvis Lake. Approximately $6000 in tools were stolen along with an Alberta Parks snowmobile, which was subsequently recovered. The suspect(s) also caused damage to vehicles and buildings that were on the site.

Almost everything but the kitchen sink - showhome near Edmonton robbed

Sometime between January 16th and 18th, unknown suspects broke into a show home in the Countryside Ravines area just West of Edmonton on Highway 16.

Once inside the show home, suspects stole appliances, furniture, and fixtures. The stolen items included:
  • fridge
  • oven
  • wine cooler
  • dishwasher
  • microwave
  • couch and chair
The stolen appliances were all stainless steel Frigidaire Professional Series. There was a French door fridge, an over-the-range microwave, a dishwasher, and a duel-fuel stove (electric oven with gas cook-top).

The entire King bedroom suite was stolen, which included a dresser/mirror, two night-stands, mattress/boxspring and bedframe, and even the comforter and pillows!

The living room furniture included a leather couch with a "chair and a half", and an ottoman.

The home audio system was taken from underneath the stairs, a high-quality zoned system for the entire home. It was an Aton DH44 audio router and a DH46-x expansion hub.

The suspects even tried to steal the kitchen sink, but appeared to be thwarted in their efforts and left with half of the faucet .It appears the suspects kicked in the back door, then opened the garage and drove a vehicle in. It is likely a trailer was also used to haul items. There was approximately $30,000 worth of stolen items and damage to the home.

Flagstaff County search warrant yields recovery of stolen property, charges

On January 21, 2014 members of the Killam/Forestburg RCMP Detachment, with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team and RCMP Special Tactical Operations executed a search warrant at a rural property in Flagstaff County. A multitude of stolen property was recovered during the course of a two day search. The value of the property is estimated to be in excess of $40,000 and included items such as ATVs, a utility trailer, generators, miscellaneous tools and a 1,000 gallon propane tank.

The search warrant was the result of a lengthy investigation into stolen property.

39 year old Curtis Schaaf of Flagstaff County has been charged with number of criminal offences including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Schaaf is scheduled to appear in Killam Provincial Court on February 4, 2014.

Theft of tools in Acheson Industrial Area

Sometime during the night on Friday, January 17th, unknown suspects stole a large Greenlee job box full of construction tools from a work site in the Acheson Industrial Area, just West of Edmonton.

The job box was chained to a post, but the lock was cut and the entire job box removed. Stolen items included:
  • 2 Milwaukee combo kits
  • M18 Milwaukee fuel 1/2" hammer drill
  • M18 Milwaukee fuel 1/4" hex impact
  • M18 Milwaukee cordless bandsaw
  • cordless 18V Hilty
  • corded Bosch Bulldog drill
  • Milwaukee corded bandsaw
  • 2 three-way self-leveling laser levels- Bosch and Johnson
  • assorted hand tools
  • personal items, including safety binder, pay stubs, etc
