Local crews respond to bale fire

Toni Lucas, Pincher Creek Voice

Pincher Creek Emergency Services responded to a rural bale fire call at approximately 3:00 pm Wednesday January 15. The site was approximately 5 kilometers north of the highway 3, 1 kilometre west of highway 22.  Pincher Creek Fire responded with a tanker and an engine, Lundbreck Fire responded with an engine, and Cowley Fire responded with a tanker.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries in the blaze that consumed 45 round hay bales, just under half the number of bales stored at that location.  A possible cause of the original ignition of the conflagration was machine exhaust.

Firefighters were on scene until 10:30 pm, and responded to later calls after the fire re-ignited.  "It's common in this type of fire," explained said PCES Deputy Chief Pat Neumann.  Bales are designed to shed water, which hampered firefighting efforts.

Members of Livingstone Hutterite Colony came to assist, helping move unaffected bales away from the flames and spread the ones on fire out more so the crews could access them.  "They were great neighbours," said Neumann.
