Dear wild horse supporters,
There have been many efforts made by many people over recent months to bring desperately needed attention to our dwindling wild horses and the plight they continue to face in Canada. I write to you today to announce that these valid efforts have sadly continued to be ignored by the government of Alberta, specifically the ESRD (Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development).
Pictures have just been released which were photographed within the wild horse region known as the foothills of Sundre. They show a road that has been freshly ploughed to a well-known wild horse capture site and there was a truck and large horse trailer present in the remote area. This is alarming, as the ESRD has stated until today "No decision regarding the 2013/2014 cull and issuing of wild horse trapping licenses has been made". Later last evening news broke that that ESRD has been in contact with the capture permit holders (the horse trappers), regarding the trapping season that WILL be held this year. ESRD has also agreed to plough out access to areas where the trappers will be setting up their capture pens. This apparently took place last week while at the same time the ESRD, a department of the Alberta provincial government, was still publicly stating that a decision had yet to be made.
This blatant scheme to hide their intentions to cull our wild horses again cannot be allowed to continue. In Canada we all have the right to information and the right to due process. All of which have been ignored by the ESRD. A public inquiry should be demanded regarding this lack of transparency. Today, the ESRD came clean to media after wild horse advocates flooded their phone lines demanding answers. Up to 200 wild horses will be trapped this season, starting immediately and running through March.
With a Federal petition calling on the House of Commons to protect Alberta's wild horses, entered on December 3rd 2013 with 3,600 signatures, this online petition you've signed demanding the same action with over 6,800 international signatures, the Alberta wild horses are no longer just a local issue, they are a world wide cause!
I ask each and every one of you, to make one more stand in solidarity for our last wild horses. Call the ESRD today and demand they halt the cull. Contact your local media and ask that they run a story. Share this petition, tell your friends and family about Alberta's wild horses.
We have no more time. It will take an army to save these animals...that army is you.
