Lightning strikes Southwest Rockies

The Southwest Rockies got a cool reception Saturday afternoon December 7 at Airdrie.

Airdrie Lightning blanked the Rockies 7-0 in a South Central Alberta Bantam AA Hockey league game.

The Rockies are now 3-14-1 and in sixth place in the South Division, one point ahead of Badlands Longhorns from Brooks.


The loss was the ninth in a row for the Rockies, who are composed of players from Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek, Lethbridge, Crowsnest Pass and Chestermere.

Next action for the Rockies is Saturday, Dec. 14 when they host Medicine Hat Venom at 5 p.m. at Crowsnest Pass.

On Sunday, Dec. 15 the Rockies are at home at the Crowsnest Pass for a 12 noon start against Bow Valley Timberwolves.

The Rockies play their final game before the Christmas break on Saturday, Dec. 21 at Medicine Hat.

The Lightning struck first Saturday with the only goal of the opening period. Just over four minutes into the second period the Lightning went up 2-0, and four minutes after that scored again to lead 3-0. Airdrie popped two more goals in the second period to take a 5-0 lead into the dressing room. The Lightning continued their domination in the third period, scoring twice to make the final score 7-0.

The Lightning peppered Rockies goalie Kyle Roberts with 37 shots.
Airdrie goal Landen Richardson faced just 17 shots to get the shutout.
The Rockies made things difficult for themselves, taking 34 minutes in penalties to Airdrie’s 12.
