The stop sign at the corner of Main Street and Robertson Avenue which controls traffic heading east-west down Main Street has been the subject of complaints from some residents nearby ever since 2011, with homeowner Vic Walker presenting their case most frequently.
The issue has been brought before Town Council and the Committee of the Whole at least 11 times, and a motion to have the signs removed was defeated in May 2011 and at the October 15 meeting of council it was again on the agenda.
This time a motion to remove the stop signs passed, according to Councillor Lorne Jackson, who was in attendance.
Councillor Jackson and other residents and members of council have expressed that they still see a need to investigate alternatives to calm traffic in the area, specifically in the two blocks west of the Robertson/Main Street intersection, which is highly trafficked in the winter because it includes the MCC arena, the pool, and Municipal Library. Concerns have also been raised about the volume of school bus traffic that uses the intersection while moving children to and from Matthew Halton School.
Update: the stop signs in question are scheduled to be removed Wednesday morning November 13, 2013.
