New MD of Pincher Creek council elects Reeve, makes committee appointments

The new Council for the Municipal District of Pincher Creek Number 9 was sworn in at a special organizational meeting held on Tuesday afternoon, October 29.

Several members of the public were in attendance, including previous Reeve Bjorne Berg.  

MD CAO  Wendy Kay called the organizational meeting to order, and then read a passage from the Municipal Government Act that outlined the chief duties of elected officials.  She then administered the Oaths of Office to the Councillors.

Kay then asked for nominations for Reeve.

Councillor Garry Marchuk nominated Councillor Terry Yagos and Councillor Fred Schoening nominated Councillor Brian Hammond.  Councillor Grant McNab seconded both nominations.

In accepting his nomination returning  councillor Terry Yagos spoke of his experience in his last terms, during which he served as councillor, as Reeve, and as Deputy Reeve at the time of the recent election.  "Our MD is not broken," he said at one point. "W need to educate ourselves as to where we are right now."  Yagos also spoke of the importance of the Emergency Services Commission, he said he had no problem with there being no-go zones for wind energy "as long as there's a public process".

"It is very important that we learn to be an effective team."

In his briefer nomination acceptance Brian Hammond averred that he had the skills and knowledge necessary to act as Reeve.  He said he believed in openness and transparency.  "I have an open mind and I'm willing to listen."

A secret ballot was held, officiated by CAO Kay and EA Tara Cryderman.  When they returned Kay announced that Brian Hammond had been elected Reeve.  Terry Yagos was declared Deputy Reeve by acclamation.  Yagos was nominated by Schoening nominated, seconded by McNab, and there were no other nominations.

Reeve Brian Hammond assumed control, read a statement from the Reeve, and council moved on to other organizational matters.

• Subdivision Authority Meetings be held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm
• Municipal Planning Commission Meetings be held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm
• Council Meetings be held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:00 pm
