Matthew Halton High School's JV and Senior Hawks Girls volleyball teams hosted the Nobleford Blades on Monday evening, September 30.  The Senior Hawks earned a narrow victory over the Blades.

The JV Hawks automatically forfeited their game  because SR Hawks were on the court due to a short roster of JV girls. "So we played that game for fun as both teams gained more experience," explained Hawks Coach Sylvia Perry.

JV game
Both the Blades and the Hawks seemed to need some better communication and a little more time on the court getting to know their roles on their respective teams.  Coach Perry agreed with that.  "Yes, we have new players and I have known them for about an hour; I just met them today," said Perry.

"They are three players that just signed up.  We have Trinity, Claire and Miranda who has been with us for a couple of days and they will all get a chance to play in the Seniors' game."  Perry was watching the game intently, getting to know not only her opponents but also her own team.

The JV Hawks won the first set, 25 - 17.  The second set was one of the most exciting sets of the night.  At many times throughout the set one or the other team was ahead, and then they would tie it up and the race was back on.  The set ended with the Blades winning by 22 - 25.

The final set the Blades took 18 - 25, making the match 1 - 2 and the JV match that was automatically forfeited to them also became a win on the scoreboard for Nobleford.

"For the first time that all of the girls have been on the court together, I thought their communication was actually quite good," said Perry.   "A lot of them didn't even know each other prior to the game.  They went out there and tried their best and I think they did all right."

SR game
The Senior girls took their game through through all five sets (best of three). Blades #2 Bailey Coutu showed time and time again that she would dig for the ball, and Hawks' Samantha Cyr's setting skills are improving greatly.  The Blades took the first set 21 - 25, and the Hawks evened it up after winning the second set 25 - 18, also winning the third set 25 - 18.  The Blades took the fourth set 19 - 25.

Both teams worked hard in the final set, with the Hawks ultimately winning it by a definitive 16 - 8 to win the day.
