*Correction; an earlier version of this story contained an inaccuracy about who won the final 'A' set and match. That set went to the A Dragons, who therefore won the match.  Our apologies for the error.

St. Michael's Dragons Junior A and B Boys volleyball teams hosted the F.P. Walshe  Flyers on Thursday evening October 17.

The A teams include athletes from grades 8 and 9, and the B teams are composed of grade 7 athletes.

The A teams took to the court first.  In the first set the Flyers easily beat the Dragons, who seemed a little under prepared for the level of competition that the Flyers brought to the table.

"A" game

The second set was a more interesting game.  The Dragons seemed to view the first set as a warm up and dug in hard.  Throughout the whole set there were many times that the teams were tied.  The Dragons kept pulling forward, winning the set 25 - 20.

Calvin Cooley of the Dragons demonstrated his skills in this game, with an impressive streak of serves.  For the Flyers, #2 Tyler Bond demonstrated a good serve did a terrific job of setting up some of his team's scoring opportunities. The Dragons dominated much of the third set, holding on for the win 25 - 23, to win the match.

"B" Game

It was time for the B Boys to take to the court.  The Flyers followed the lead of their older counterparts by winning the first set by a wide margin.  In the second set the Dragons were ready to show what they are made of.   This set was tied at many points, and there was plenty of fast paced action.  Thomas Alexander of the Dragons showed that he has a good consistent serve, and Colter VanEe was playing well throughout the match.  This set was a bit of a heartbreak for the Dragons, as the Flyers won the set by two points.

The two teams chose to play the third set for the experience, even though the previous set had determined a Flyers victory.  "The B Team is young, this is a learning experience," said Dragons Coach Tina Delinte.

B Flyers Coach Travis Bevan said he has been happy with the performance of his players throughout the season.  "We haven't lost a single game this season.  We've had a very good season,"  he said. The B Flyers have played 4 league games so far this season.  They have also participated in two tournaments, placing first in one  and second in another.  Bevan believes in teaching three rules to his team, and his boys could recite them with ease:  Have fun, move your feet, and call the ball.
