Developer of the 'Becoming A Community Builder' Program Ian Hill is planning on visiting Pincher on October 3rd to meet with those in the community interested in 'Becoming a Community Builder'. This is a course to teach leadership skills and qualities at an accelerated pace.
Hill has been in Pincher Creek before, most notably to help in the creation of the playground that was developed as part of the 'Let Them be Kids' project, another of Hill's projects. During that time Hill came with members of his family and made long lasting friendships with people in this community. "When they left Pincher Creek last time, they cried," Hill said of his daughters.
A side benefit of the experience of the 'Let Them be Kids' program for Hill was he was able to use what he learned from the venture to create a curriculum that helps to train leaders. That is the basis for the BACB.
Because of his fondness for the people and the area, he felt he was biased and removed his say from the selection process in regards to BACB for our region. He was delighted when Pincher Creek was selected to be one of the lighthouse regions.
Hill expressed that he believes that rural communities are vital to the inherent strength of a nation, and that they are facing a number of serious issues.
"Let the people closest to the problem solve their problem,"said Hill who defends that if you give the people closest to a problem the training and tools to solve a problem, they will do that more efficiently that an outside force may be able to do. "If you make an all out commitment to the development of informal community leaders, something great happens."
According to Hill's research it takes 5 to 7 years before a community leader will naturally develop into a leader. His BABC program has been designed to accelerate the process and is being offered to individuals within Pincher Creek, Piikani, and Waterton areas for free. This program starts on October 18.
