Travel safe, play safe, get home safe this long weekend

Alberta’s enforcement officers will be out in force this August long weekend to help ensure families, friends and visitors get to their destination and back safely, and enjoy their time at lakes, parks, and campsites.

“Long weekends are a great time for Albertans and visitors to get together and have fun,” said Jonathan Denis, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. “The increased enforcement on highways, parks and public lands is designed to help responsible Albertans enjoy the weekend safely.”
Long weekends can be notorious for increased traffic collisions and fatalities. As part of promoting road safety, traffic enforcement measures are being stepped up.

Alberta’s integrated traffic units (comprising sheriffs and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) will have an increased presence on Alberta’s roadways enforcing traffic laws. In addition to Check Stop locations, impaired driving, aggressive and careless driving, distracted driving and speeding will be targeted this long weekend to help reduce the number of collisions on provincial highways.

As part of getting to their long weekend destination and back safely, drivers need to follow traffic laws. Albertans have a personal responsibility when behind the wheel to keep highways safe. Drivers who choose to disobey traffic laws and put the lives of other road users at risk will be dealt with through fines, prosecution, or a combination of both.

Conservations officers, fish and wildlife officers and commercial vehicle enforcement officers will also be out in force this long weekend, patrolling Alberta’s roadways, water bodies, parks, and public land.

A combination of enforcement and driver responsibility will help ensure all Albertans can have a safe and enjoyable weekend.
