The Pincher Creek and District 4-H Swine Achievement Show and Sale was held on Monday, June 3, 2013.  Two clubs including 17 4-H members participated.  The Rocky Mountain 4-H Swine Club had 7 members sporting bright red shirts and Pincher Creek Chinook Multi 4-H Club had 10 members in their distinctive burgundy shirts.  During the show banners were awarded to Interclub Grand Champion Bruce Kirby, Interclub Reserve Champion Taylor Deley, Swine Club Grand Champion Alyssa Barbero and Swine Club Reserve Champion Levi Anderson.

"I have done a lot of judging before, this was the first time I judged in Pincher Creek," said Show Judge Andrew Beusekom of Magnum Swine Genetics Inc. Fort Macleod.  "It was a pleasure to do it, this was a good group of kids.  Even those that didn't win are happy and gracious."

Beusekom said that much of the criteria he used for judging the swine were market traits that would maximize sales values.

After the show the 4-H members were allowed to relax, visit and have fun until after the free dinner offered to participants and the crowd that featured some beautifully roasted pork, preceded by grace, which was a 4-H ditty sung to the tune of Auld Lang Syne: "We thank thee, Lord, for blessings great on this, our own fair land.  Teach us to serve thee joyfully, with head, heart, health and hand."

Once many of the buyers started to arrive the club members stayed near the project pens to answer questions anyone might have.  Then it was time for the sale.  Alyssa Barbero led the crowd in the singing of 'O Canada' and the bidding began.

Frank Jenkins from Southern Alberta Livestock Exchange ran the auction with his usual speed and efficiency.  According to the Alberta Pork website the average market price of a Canadian hog live weight in early May was $0.90/lb. Two pigs that were bought by Shell Waterton were donated back to the clubs and resold, adding to the coffers of the clubs.  One pig was sold three times, earning a whopping $9.60/lb.

A number of cooked pork roasts were also sold at the end of the auction for the benefit of the clubs.
