89 individuals and organizations are nominated for this year’s Minister’s Seniors Service Awards. In Pincher Creek Margery Laatsch was nominated for this annual award for people who make a difference in the lives of seniors.
"I'm honoured, but I know that there are so that do so much more than I do, and they may never get recognized," said Margery Laatsch, who was busy helping make the Crestview May Birthday Party a success. "I appreciate this immensely. Volunteering has given back to me as much as I given to it. I've been widowed for eight years, and I'm alone and retired. I could make a conscience choice to sit at home. What I do is volunteer. We need volunteers, and I'm free enough to do it. I'm lucky enough to have my daughter here, and she's there for me. Other people don't have family close by. Especially with the Care Bears, driving's not such a problem."
Laatsch says that her favorite duty is taking people to appointments through Care Bears. "Care Bears is my biggest love, and it's so needed here. Medical appointments, dental, eye appointments, even hair appointments. The look on their faces when you do something for them. They are thankful and so grateful."
"She's a really good volunteer, and has done numerous things for our facility," said Crestview Lodge Activity Coordinator Cathy Klein who was delighted about Laatsch's nomination. "Margery is a very giving, and kind person. She's always there."
Nominee Margery Laatsch has been assisting Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass seniors for 15 years. She helps with activities at the Crestview Lodge, and assists with clinics through the Alberta Health Services' Volunteer Resources Program. She delivers Meals on Wheels, and drives for Care Bears. The awards
Award recipients will be honoured at a special celebration on June 5, during Seniors’ Week.
