Make an Emergency plan
Canadians are encouraged to learn about the emergencies that can happen where they live and to plan for situations that are likely to occur. You should know, for example, if your region susceptible to flooding.
Since we all have a role to play in personal preparedness, it's up to all of us to take steps now to prepare for the unexpected and make our communities safer and more resilient.
Here are some steps you can take this week to get started:
• Know the risks. Although the consequences of emergencies can be similar, knowing the risks specific to your area can help you better prepare.
• Make a plan. Advance preparation will help you and your family know what to do. Plan for a place to meet and where you would go if you had to evacuate.
• Get an emergency kit. During an emergency, potentially without electricity or water, basic supplies will be required. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.
• Check out Public Safety Canada's emergency preparedness site, GetPrepared.ca. Watch videos on preparing an emergency plan and an emergency kit; download an emergency preparedness e-book; and find practical information on preparing for a range of emergencies.
• Join the conversation and spread the word. Follow @Get_Prepared on Twitter, and share emergency preparedness tips and ideas with your family and friends to get them talking about what they would do if an emergency occurred.
