Landslide closes Highway 744 on Judah Hill near Peace River

To protect the travelling public, a portion of Highway 744 from the corporate limits of the Town of Peace River to the top of Judah Hill has been closed due to a severe and active landslide.

Traffic entering and exiting the Town of Peace River via Highway 744 (Judah Hill) is detoured to Highway 2 and Highway 683. Due to the location and severity of the slide, the length of time the road closure will be in effect is unknown.

Ensuring the safety of motorists is one of Alberta Transportation’s top priorities. The threat posed by the quick deterioration of conditions and the slide’s ongoing activity resulted in the closing of Judah Hill shortly after midnight on May 18. Detour signs were installed onsite to redirect traffic to Highway 2 and Highway 683.

Local authorities, including the local school division, RCMP and emergency services staff, were informed of the closure and alternate route. Alberta Transportation issued a Public Service Announcement to inform local residents of the detour over the weekend.

La Prairie Works Inc., the Alberta Transportation contractor responsible for the maintenance of the highway in the area, continues to closely monitor the slide’s activity. Geotechnical Engineers will be inspecting the slide area and recommending possible treatment options.

Drivers are reminded to obey all signs and signals.
