Healthy U 5and1 Experiment helps families develop healthy habits
Alberta Health press release
“Eye Spy,” “Colour Your World,” and “Bad Smells with Benefits” are just a few of the food experiments and physical activities available in the new Healthy U 5&1 Experiment, challenging Alberta families to try nutritious food and get active.
“Parents play an important role in influencing their children’s physical activity levels and eating habits,” said Associate Minister of Wellness Dave Rodney. “The Healthy U 5&1 Experiment is an easy way to equip parents to help their elementary-aged kids get at least five servings of veggies and fruit, and an hour of activity each day.”
The Healthy U 5&1 Experiment offers 42 challenges for the whole family. Each challenge includes a food experiment and activity to get families moving every day. Children will be encouraged to identify ingredients in their meals and discover facts about food, such as why lemons prevent a fruit salad from turning brown. Each food experiment is paired with an activity or game.
Healthy food choices and regular activity can make a significant difference in improving the health and well-being of Albertans. Many of the 5&1 experiments take only 15 minutes. Adding them to a family’s daily routine will help children reach their daily recommendations for healthy eating and physical activity.
The Healthy U 5&1 experiments are available through an interactive website, a mobile app, and experiment kits that will be distributed to schools and at public events this spring and summer. Parents can download the app (for Apple and Android users), sign up their children, and track their progress by visiting 5and1.healthyalberta.com.
Healthy U supports and encourages all Albertans to lead healthier lifestyles by providing information and resources to support healthy eating and active living.
