Constable Robert Wright has been seen in the Pincher Creek area for the last six years at Remembrance Day Ceremonies, in schools, out in public with his family, and on the job as a member of the local RCMP force.
Most recently he was handing out graduation certificates for students who participated in the Canyon School DARE program, for which he has long served as a volunteer. Now he is saying goodbye to Pincher Creek, as he has been assigned a new RCMP position in the Lake Louise/Banff area.
In the pursuit of his duty as an officer and his inclination as a private citizen Constable Wright has strived to make a positive impact in his community.
For the last six years, he has volunteered his time teaching Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE). He was enlisted previously in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and served in Afghanistan. He was a recipient of the Queens Jubilee Medal last year in recognition of his service in the Pincher Creek area.
At the recent Canyon School Dare graduation (story soon) parents and grandparents came to thank Wright. They spoke to him about the positive effects that they have seen in their children and grandchildren, the beneficial impact that this program has. Wright has seen it himself. "You're able to teach somebody some really important life skill, and they take it to heart, and it benefited them in ways they have only begun to realize," he said.
Constable Wright is proud that the kids that he taught in the DARE program six years ago are now older youths that he does not tend to have to interact with in the course of his duties as an RCMP officer.
The Canyon School graduates of this year's program awarded Constable Wright with a framed photo of themselves, that all the students signed.
As a personal goal, Wright is planning to participate in the 200 kilometer Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer that takes place June 22 - 23 in Calgary to help the Alberta Cancer Foundation. So far Wright has collected close to $2,500 in pledges for this cause, one that has long term affects for a wide range of the population.
Wright is very attached to the Pincher Creek area. This was his first assignment after leaving the Canadian Armed Forces and graduating from RCMP training. "This is the first spot that me and my family really called 'home'. It really feels like I'm leaving my home town."
"To all of the friends we have made in Pincher Creek, thank you so much for your friendship and support in all of our endeavours over the last six years. You'll be greatly missed and well thought of, and well spoken of. If we ever get the opportunity to come back, we will welcome it with both arms."
