Yesterday evening May 27 Pincher Creek's Sr. Girls Hawks rugby team travelled to Lethbridge to play the Chinook Coyotes in a tier 2 quarter-final game. The Hawks fought hard and won 10 -5.
The game was one of our better starts, as it has been something I have been working on, as the team this year has struggled at the beginning of the game. Yesterday was not the case as they started strong and after 10 minutes the game was still 0 – 0. At about the 15 minute mark the Hawks, thanks to great forward play, were able to punch across the goal line with Lauren Higginbotham scoring the try.
The Hawks let up on the pressure a bit and the Coyotes were able to score about 5 minutes later to head in to the half tied 5 – 5.
In the second half the Hawks came out and worked hard and were able to fend off all the Chinook pressure. With about 15 minutes left to play Dakota Van Loon picked and ran off the scrum for 25 yards and Rebecca Lowry was there to take a pass and run across for a try, putting the Hawks up 10 – 5.
The Hawks were great under the pressure and were able to hold off any threats by Chinook for the last 15 minutes to win the game.
Next up: Wednesday May 29 the Hawks travel again to Lethbridge to take on first seed Winston Churchill in semi-final action.
