Alzheimer Memory Walks to be held in Lethbrige, Blairmore, Cardston

Press release

The Investors Group Memory Walk held in Lethbridge on June 1, 2013 and the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories invite everyone to join in.

This year they are adding a walk kick-off and Caregiver Celebration on May 31 at Paradise Canyon Restaurant for caregivers of people with dementia.  Tickets are free but you must have a ticket to attend.  Tickets can be picked up at the Alzheimer Society office at #402, 740 – 4th Ave South, Lethbridge or by calling 329-3766.

“At the Celebration we will have many door prizes, every guest will receive a care package, and Marnie Stanley will be making a presentation on Caregiving.  Registration begins at 10:30 with a brunch at 11:00 am.  We are grateful to Tompkins Jewelers for sponsoring this event” said Diane Herrick, Manager of Community Relations for Southern Alberta.  “We want to recognize the tireless work caregivers give to those with dementia.  It is a very tough road at times and we feel they deserve the support and gratitude of our organization”.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the Alzheimer Society” said Diane continued.  “We have teamed up with the Investors Group to help make this event a success.  People can visit our website at www.alzheimer.ab.ca and click on the walk icon for more walk information or they can call me at 403-329-3766.  We are looking for volunteers and participants to help raise funds for Alzheimer research and program.”

Registration for the walk will begin at 9 am at the Henderson Lake Horseshoe Pits with the walk starting at 10.  The Investors Group is sponsoring our lunch which will follow the walk.

“We have lots of fun activities to make the event memorable. During the walk you will find signs with words on them.  Put the words together to make a saying and you will win a prize.  For every $20 you raise in pledges you receive a door prize ticket.  You can place the tickets in any door prize choice you like – put them all in one or divide your tickets between the many prizes.  After lunch we will draw for the winners. There will also be a face painter and Moon Dancer will be entertaining us”.

“Building memories with our loved ones is very important which is why we want this event to be for the entire family” Diane continues “I remember coming to Henderson Lake with my family and building memories”.   Alzheimer’s disease may rob a person of their memories but the family will always remember the happy times shared together.  Don’t miss this amazing event!

Diane also mentioned the Alzheimer Society will be holding walks in Blairmore on June 15th and Cardston on June 22nd.

About Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease is the leading form of dementia. It is a fatal progressive disease of the brain that robs memory and steals the ability to reason, communicate and perform daily tasks. Changes in the brain can begin to appear decades before diagnosis and progression can last between seven and 10 years. Eventually, the person affected will require 24-hour care and supervision. Age is the single biggest risk factor but the disease can strike as early as 40.
