Long-time Pincher Creek resident Rose Johnson was the first recipient of  the "Pincher Creek Inspiring Woman Award" that will henceforth be named "The Rose Johnson Award" in honour of  her outstanding example of her community service and commitment. The award ceremony took place during the
Women’s Wellness Fair held at St. Michael's School on Saturday, April 20.

Johnson has been working with the Literacy Program for the Pincher Creek Learning Council for over 15 years.  In the summer she takes flowers  to local seniors centers.  In the winter she takes cookies.  The visits she has with the residents there brightens their day and improves the quality of their lives.

Johnson spoke enthusiastically about teaching English as a second language, and the challenges that someone has when they go to a new country.

"I try to imagine myself in South Korea and unable to read the street signs, or to go to the grocery store or the post office," said Johnson, demonstrating her deep empathy.  She invited those interested in helping volunteer to teach to contact the Learning Council.  "Then you can help someone to become a better Canadian."
