Chinook at last year's walk T. Lucas photo |
The Lion's Foundation Annual Dog Walk will be held on Sunday, May 5 beginning at Pincher Creek's Memorial Community Centre Arena with registration at 1:30 pm followed by the walk at 2:00 pm.
Locally this event is a project of the Cowley, Pincher Creek, and Pincher Cowley Roaring Lions Clubs.
Every year the Lion's Foundation raises funds to help train Dog Guides to assist those who require special help to function in their daily lives.
Five types of Dog Guides are trained, including Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Special Skills, Seizure Response, and Autism Assistance. Each dog costs approximately $20,000 to raise and train and then is given to qualified applicants at no cost. The dogs are trained in Oakville, Ontario by the Lion's Foundation.
At present there are eleven service dogs in southern Alberta.
The annual walk takes place in over 200 communities across Canada.
As a new project, the Lion's Foundation is hoping to raise enough funds to begin training Diabetic Alert Dog Guides for people with Type 1 diabetes. These dogs can detect and alert when life threatening changes in blood glucose levels occur.
