Snowfall warning and Travel Advisories issued (expired)

Redcliff RCMP advise all highways in the Redcliff and Cypress County are now open. Extreme winter driving conditions are still affecting all area roads and highways. RCMP request motorists drive according to these conditions.

Redcliff RCMP want to advise that due to zero visibility and extreme winter weather, Highway 1 is now closed from Suffield to the Saskatchewan Border both east and westbound. Also highway 3 is closed from Seven Persons to Medicine Hat in both directions. Highway 41 north and highway 41 south remain open but driving is not recommended until road and weather conditions improve. Blowing snow, zero to poor visibility and icy road conditions are evident on all roads in the area. The RCMP are responding to collisions as well as vehicles in the ditch. Again the motoring public is urged to stay off the roads until conditions improve.

Fort MacLeod March 3 Amendment Notice to Public Hwy closures

The Fort Macleod RCMP is advising of roads openings. Highway 2 North of Fort Macleod to Calgary is open. Highway 3 East bound to Lethbrigde area from Fort Macleod is still closed. Highway 519 from Highway 2 to Highway 23 is not closed but travel is not recommended at this time. Highway 2 South from Fort Macleod to Cardston is still very slippery and travel is not recommended.

Travel on all roads is still not ideal and they are still very slippery and visibility is still limited in some areas.

Environment Canada has lifted the winter storm warning for Calgary.

However, the warning remains in place for communities south of the city including Okotoks, High River, Claresholm, Brooks, Strathmore and Vulcan.

511 report: Highway 2 from Nanton to Cardston, Highway 3 from Brocket to Lethbridge, Highway 23 from Barons to Highway 3 is closed due to blowing snow and high winds.  Highway 1 from junction highway 9 to junction highway 24 is closed due to a multi vehicle collision. Highway 93 from Jasper to Saskatchewan Crossing is closed due to heavy snow until at least Monday at 5 pm. There are snowfall and winter storm warnings for the southern half of the province.

Update March 3, 2013, 4:30 pm: Most Southern Alberta Highways are closed or in very poor condition.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Pincher Creek and other parts of southern Alberta.

10 to 25 centimetres of snowfall expected.

A low pressure center is moving through Southern Alberta today generating heavy snow and strong northerly winds gusting to 60 km/h. In open areas east of Calgary to Medicine Hat wind gusts as strong as 80 km/h can be expected. The falling snow combined with the strong gusts will create poor visibilities less than 1 kilometre in snow and blowing snow.

If you are currently stranded in your vehicle call 911 and advise of your location and emergency services will be dispatched to assist you. If you have been in an accident police will be dispatched for injuries and to assist with getting you off the Highway. Vehicles in ditches or that have been in accidents will not be towed at this time as road conditions are not safe to do so.


RCMP Claresholm advising of poor winter driving conditions. Highway 2 is shut down at the entrance of Claresholm (Township Road 132) RCMP Members are on scene, diverting traffic into the town of Claresholm.

RCMP Okotoks, High River and Nanton, advise of poor winter driving conditions on Highway 2, south of Calgary to Fort Macleod. Driving conditions include blowing snow, snow covered lanes, snow drifts and reduced visibility. Travel is not recommending on Highway 2 and secondary Highways.

RCMP High River advising Highway 2 North Bound lanes closed at Aldersyde overpass, traffic being re-routed to 498 avenue then on to Highway 2A.

The Fort Macleod RCMP is advising of road closures. This includes Highway 2 North from Nanton to Cardston area. Hwy 3 From the Brocket area to the City of Lethbridge. Hwy 519 from Hwy 2 to Hwy 23. Hwy 23 from Barons to Hwy 3. Weather conditions of high winds and blowing snow are causing limited visibility and making the roads slippery and dangerous. Anyone currently on the highway is being advised to attend the closest Town and find accommodations or a safe place to be off the main roadways. As well plans are still in the works for the community centre and or the arena to be made available to those who are traveling within the area of Fort Macleod.

Lethbridge RCMP are issuing a travel advisory for the Lethbridge and area region regarding heavy snowfall and limited to zero visibility. Roadways are treacherous in nature and travel is not recommended on Highways 3, 4 and 5, 23, 25, 845 and any other secondary or main highways in the area. RCMP are placing special recognition on the main intersection near Coalhurst which crosses 4 lanes of highway traffic. Alternate routes are suggested for public safety reasons until the weather passes.

Redcliff RCMP are advising the public to avoid travel on highways throughout Southeastern Alberta. Road conditions and visibility on Highway 1, Highway 3, and Highway 41 are poor and travel is not recommended.

RCMP Cochrane, advise of poor winter driving conditions on Highway 1 between Canmore and Cochrane. Currently only one lane of highway is open within the east bound and west bound lanes. Bumper to bumper traffic. Traffic is expected to be congested for hours. Use alternate route of Highway 22 if possible.

Highway 2 South Bound and North Bound lanes between High River and Okotoks is down to one lane of traffic with speeds approximately at 30 KM/H.



RCMP Oyen is declaring a local state of emergency due to severe weather and road conditions. Driving conditions include blowing snow, snow covered lanes, snow drifts, and low visibility. Travel is not recommended on Highway 9 from the Town of Hanna to the Saskatchewan border, as well as Highway 41 from the Town of Consort to Medicine hat.

Local RCMP Members are currently coordinating with the Town Chief Administrative Officers to open up all local shelters for citizens.

RCMP Bassano, advise of poor winter driving conditions on Highway 1, from Strathmore to Brooks. Driving conditions include blowing snow, snow covered lanes, and snow drifts. Visibility is down to approximately 20 feet.

RCMP Strathmore are advising Highway 1 East Bound and West Bound, travel not recommended. Driving conditions include blowing snow, snow covered lanes, snow drifts and reduced visibility.

Highway 1 is temporarily closed between Highway 24 and Highway 797.


Snowfall amounts of up to 25 cm are possible. A slight risk of freezing rain also exists with this system prior to the snow. Snow will taper off from the north ending in Calgary this evening and in Medicine Hat and Cypress Hills Monday morning as the low moves into Montana.
