Pincher Creek's Midget Huskies played two home games to start the new year, one on Friday, January 4 against the Picture Butte/Vauxhall Sabres and the other on Saturday against the Taber Oil Kings. The Huskies were overwhelmingly successful in both games.
Huskies vs Sabres
I'm probably going to get in trouble for saying this, but Friday's game between the Huskies and the Sabres was a pretty dull affair. Time after time the Huskies sliced through the Sabres' offence and defence. It became routine. Five Huskies' goals in the first period, one for the Sabres. Four Huskies' goals in the second period, none for the Sabres. The rough stuff got a little out of hand in the third period, and each team got a goal.
Scoring for the Huskies in this game:
Ryan Marshall with two goals and two assists
Derek Tarcon with 2 goals
Tristan Doell with an unassisted goal and an assist
Michael Roy with a goal and an assist
Blair Goodreau with 2 goals
Will Thorpe and Steven Mitchell with a goal apiece
Also picking up assists were Ryan Sciarra, Brett Tarcon, Freddie Bruder and Jared Koentges. Braeden Claringbull did a great job of net minding, when called upon to do so.
Final score: Huskies 10, Sabres 2
Huskies vs Oil Kings
The Huskies vs Oil Kings match was another one-sided affair, but it was actually a lot better hockey to watch. For the first two periods, anyway. Regular readers know my aversion to pointless hockey brawls, and the third period featured more fights than I used to see in an evening of covering Stampede Wrestling in the way-back. Only this time at least the boys weren't wearing tights.
The Huskies dominated the first period 7 goals to 1. They dominated the second period 4 goals to 1. They dominated the third period 3 goals to none. When the Oil Kings picked a fight in the third the Huskies dominated that too, but it was expensive. Three players on each team were given game misconducts.
Scoring for the Huskies in this game:
Blair Gooodreau and Ryan Sciarra with 2 goals and 2 assists each
Michael Roy and Tristan Doell with 1 goal and 2 assists each
Calahan Bruder with 2 goals
Ryan Marshall Derek Tarcon with 1 goal and 1 assist each
Brett Tarcon Jared Koentges with 1 goal each
Also getting assists: Lane Kalbhen* and Mark Sciarra
*It's not often you see a goalie getting an assist, as Kalbhen did when he made a long pass from in front of his net to Derek Tarcon in the first period.
Scoring for the Oil Kings was Alex Knibb (a nice backhanded play) assisted by Mitchel Cook in the first period and an unassisted goal by Jaden Turcato in the second period.
Final Score: Huskies 13, Oil Kings 2
I saw the game and it got me the edge of my seat. I t was really fast. I'm glad you included a video here too.
