The Waterton Biosphere Reserve Association Carnivore Working Group (CWG) will be holding an information meeting for landowners on Tuesday, January 29 beginning at 7:00 pm at Pincher Creek's Heritage Inn.
Speakers will include CWG Coordinator Jeff Bectell, Grizzly Bear Monitoring Project Coordinator Andrea Morehouse, and Montana Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit Dave Ausband.
The grizzly bear monitoring project has been collecting hair samples in SW Alberta, for DNA analysis, since 2011. At the invitation of landowners, in 2012 the project was expanded from public to private land. The information available to date will be presented, including number of samples collected, number of individual grizzlies identified etc.
Dave Ausband began doing wolf monitoring research in the area this year, and will be presenting his methods, and his findings, including information about pups born, and pack distribution. Both projects will be continuing this year, and opportunities for involvement will be discussed, as well as how this research can help landowners and wildlife managers.
The Waterton Biosphere Reserve (WBRA) has been led by community members for over 30 years, with the intent of balancing economic opportunities with environmental conservation. In 2011 the WBRA became the recipient of a grant from Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. This grant was given to promote community led initiatives, and projects for reducing problems that area residents have with large carnivores. Projects have included such things as bear proofing grain bins, paying for deadstock removal, and electric fencing around livestock and facilities. Many progressive steps are being taken, with encouraging results.
Admission is free. Attendees will be welcome to ask questions and provide feedback. Refreshments will be provided.
