A Christmas Grudge

by Sid Marty

I went into a shop
To purchase some gum
And heard that tune about
The kid and his drum
That irritating repetitious refrain
Repeated constantly just
Drives me insane
It’s stuck in my brain
Pa rum pum pum pum

Each mall I go into
Pa rum pum pum pum
It’s like a broken record
I’m feeling glum
With earplugs screwed in tight
I must not succumb
I read the zombie-shoppers’ lips
And I’m stunned
The dead can still hum
Pa rum pum pum pum

So every Christmas brings
This grudge that I nurse
I know that cheerful lad
Would gladly play worse
Imagine if he played
The didgeridoo
Bounding through Bethlehem
On a kangaroo
Playing boo hoo
Boo wah boo hoo
To the five-hundredth verse
