National Bullying Awareness Week is November 12 - 17
Albertans are invited to participate in a live cyberbullying prevention webcast on Tuesday, November 13, to learn more about cyberbullying, Internet safety and ways to support friends and family members online. Parents and youth will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss solutions with a panel of cyberbullying experts.
“No one should ever have to face a hurtful or threatening message when they turn on their phone or computer” said Dave Hancock, Minister of Human Services. “Whether you or someone close to you has been bullied online, I encourage you to join this important discussion about how we can stop bullying and promote healthy relationships.”
“This webcast is a great opportunity for people to lend their voices to solutions around the prevention of cyberbullying,” said Jeff Johnson, Minister of Education. “We need to hear from Albertans, and the world, about how we can eliminate this troubling form of abuse and ensure our kids are safe and respected in schools and the community.”
Anyone can participate by visiting b-free.ca or bullyfreealberta.ca on Tuesday, November 13, between 7 and 9 p.m. Members of the public are also invited to take part in the event at Louis St. Laurent Junior/Senior High School, 11230 - 43 Avenue, Edmonton.
Panelists for the event include:
- Matthew Johnson, Director of Education, Media Smarts;
- Katie Kitschke, Public Education Director, SAFFRON Centre;
- Jim Johannsson, Director, Community Consultation, TELUS; and,
- Steven Bizuns, Prevention of Bullying Youth Committee member.
Albertans can continue the conversation about cyberbullying prevention on the SpeakOut.alberta.ca discussion forum, during the month of November. Both b-free.ca and bullyfreealberta.ca will host the webcast live and have a list of bullying awareness activities happening across the province.
