Pincher Creek Peewee Mustangs kick off football season at Claresholm Jamboree

Well football fans, another exciting season of Pincher Creek Mustangs Football has begun. The Peewee Mustangs began their season at Claresholm for the Claresholm Raiders Jamboree, held on Saturday, September 1.


This year the 4 teams participating were the Claresholm Raiders Silver, Claresholm Raiders Black, Lethbridge Coyotes, and the Pincher Creek Mustangs.

Going into the day the Peewee Mustang coaches Tom Holoboff and Travis Liscombe did not know what to expect from the team. With only 6 returning players from last year's roster it appeared that it would be a rebuilding year. As the day progressed the coaches soon realized they have a competitive team. Coach Travis said at the end of the day that he was pleasantly surprised by the number of kids that stepped up and impressed. Travis said if someone had told him going into the day that the team would hold its own in all 3 games, he would have said "you got to be kidding me".

On this day a number of players, rookies, and veterans alike stepped up and made big plays. Being the smallest of the 4 teams by a long shot, the Mustangs had to rely on the speed of Jordan Hochstein and Richie LaGrandeur to produce the team's 3 touchdowns. Mathew had the Mustangs big pass reception for his first touch of the pig skin. Behind the blocking of Gus (the beef) Halibert and the rest of the offensive line Tj Metcalfe was able to make some nice runs up the middle. Tristan Liscombe showed great poise as he assumed the reins of Quarterback, with Richie LaGrandeur having his eyes opened to the position when he spelled Tristan off.

Trent Metcalfe, Jessie Saulnier, and Joshua Fichtner made numerous tackles on the defensive line, shutting down the opposition's run-game with Jordan Hochstein, Tate Lessen, and Caleb Jones stuffing many outside runs. Lewis Anderson, Mike (the monster) LaGrandeur and James Fichtner assisted on numerous tackles.

The Mustangs came away empty handed as far as wins go, losing 3-1 to Claresholm Silver, 2-0 to Claresholm Black, and 3-2 to the much larger Lethbridge Coyotes, however the team came away long in experience and to a man all said that it was the most fun they had ever had.

The Peewee Mustangs next action is scheduled for Saturday, September 8 at Mathew Halton Field for the Hometown Heroes Jamboree. If you want to see some of Pincher Creek's future football stars in action come down to the field and cheer the Mustangs on. I guarantee you will have lots to cheer and laugh about while enjoying the great game of football.
